Converters in the XT and uW2 (my impression)

Post by GeneralBigbag » Thu Aug 09, 2007 5:37 am

So, at long last I got my hands on a MicrowaveXT, after owning a Microwave2 for several years. Initially, I had decided to buy the XT since I'm really, really trying for a live thing. I knew that more knobs would always be a good thing, and the delay was certainly not unwelcome.
When I was originally looking for a uWave, I learned about the difference in the converters (18 vs 20 bit) but I could never find a review which made any comment.

Well:
To me, the two synths sound different, and I'm pretty sure it's that.
The XT seems to have a slightly cleaner, more defined sound, with the uW2, I would often find myself reaching for external processing to give it a little bit of sparkle and punch (to go with all of the digital grunge), with the XT, I don't think I'll be needing to.
I'm sure that the 6dB output boost helps in the perception of the sound, I always had my uW2 turned up a little bit higher than everything else to get it up into the mix.

That said, I found that there was something about the sound of the uW2 that made me push it much harder to get it where I wanted it to go; and I got some nasty sounds out of it indeed. I'm sure I'll get there with the XT, but it somehow seems ever so slightly more polite...? I doubt that can't be remedied with a bit of the old aliasing, but still...

Unfortunately, things worked out so that I didn't have both synths in the house at the same time, so I can't A/B them, but that's my impression thus far, and I thought it might prove of use.
