This whole thing is ridiculous. I mean, this is a f*cking synth discussion forum, isn't it? I'd say that people should accountable for what they say - does it make sense, is it gratuitously negative, etc - but why shouldn't people who are disappointed in the specs of the synth post about it? I'm anxious to hear it (don't much care for the sound in the demos, actually), but I if featurewise it doesn't do it for me, then it better sound awful good. So - I can consider the features, and say - damn, I wish it were multitimbral, and that's perfectly valid. That's not saying that Dave is evil for designing it that way, or that he should even care about what I personally think. But if he decides to design synths whose features aren't what I want, I have the right to not buy them, to also respect Dave, and to also make my feelings known on a synth discussion forum.KLAXON wrote:Some people just like to complain about everything. Even if it had every feature they wanted some people would still find something to complain about like "I don't know why they used xxx wood for encaps, I wanted xxx wood instead" or "why did they use xxx colour, I wanted xxx colour" Some people will never be happy.
If you don't like it, nobody is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to buy it.

Oh please. GRATITUDE? I think that it's good that Dave Smith is putting out an 8 voice poly analog synth. He is also trying to make money by doing so. I'll judge the synth on its merits and buy it if I decide it's worth it to me. I'll comment about its features and its sound on a synth discussion forum. If this is indeed a great synth, then most of the doubters will be silenced. If it isn't, well, then it isn't. Suppose (and I don't think that this will be the case) it's a stinker. Should everyone just shut up out of gratitude?Jack Spider wrote:How about some of our number showing a bit of grace, allowing the P8 to be released and seeing what it CAN do, instead of complaining about what it can't?
I don't know if it's just me, but I can't help but feel that some of you could do with exercising some manners and perhaps a little gratitude at the fact that Dave's come on here with exclusive news of a new synth.
How about instead of whining at what little teaser information we've been given, show a bit of patience before mouthing off? It'd be a very sad day if the likes of 'Disappointed, Berkshire' has put Dave (or anyone else in such a position) off from posting any future exclusive peeks on here.

What the h**l is your problem. I have every right to post about a KNOWN feature of the synth, or lack thereof. And I have every right to decide to buy it or not if the feature set isn't what I want. The Andromeda is multimbral - it's also more expensive (though not really if it's used). the Omega 8, and the Sunsyn (to a limited degree) are multimbral. These are all issues to consider, and discuss on a synth discussion board. Oh, I'm sorry. Forget what I just said. Thanks, Dave, for inventing MIDI.neandrewthal wrote:To those who wish the prophet 8 was multi-timbral:
For god's sake it's a low priced analog polysynth. If you want a multimbral synth get a VA........or a modular. Better yet, get 2 prophet 8s and MIDI them together, BTW we should be thanking Dave Smith for even having invented
MIDI instead of complaining that his new synth isn't multi-timbral.
Haha. You're funny Gene.droolmaster0 wrote:This whole thing is ridiculous. I mean, this is a f*cking synth discussion forum, isn't it? I didn't assume that your comments were directed at me, and I wasn't even thinking about that. I just think that what you said was silly.KLAXON wrote:Haha. In case you weren't aware that comment wasn't directed at you, but at all of the whiners in general. But you did prove my point though, to some extent, some people just like to complain about everything. Even comments that were not directed specifically at them.

Actually, the reason why the JX10 and the Synthex sound full is their Chorus. Same with the ProphetVS that actually has two choruses. The problem with a Chorus is that it gives the sound a certain stigma. And it is getting ennoying when all the programs in your synth have the same stigma!CTB wrote:All this talk of DCO's really made me realize what a thin, lame, piece of s**t with no character my JX10 is. Yeah, DCO's really suck.

So, whoever says that this DCO synth or that one sounds so great, listen to it wihtout the chorus!! And of course the waveforms between a VCO and a DCO are identical, both are produced in a similar way. The problem is that the VCO is controlled by voltage and the instability of the circuit let the oscillator drift. When you tell an oscillator to swing at 440.0000Hz with a DCO, it will swing at that exactly frequency. Unfortunately that is not easy on your ears to hear a steady pitch waveform. That is the difference!!!
Anyway, if the P08 is a success or not depends on the sound and the modulation capabilities and maybe the hype that can be created by the Prophet name. But whereas Moog went up and beyond to create a Minimoog ultra with their Voyager, Dave tries to come in at a decent pricepoint. If $2k is low enough, especially when looking at the 16 voices Andromeda, that is the question. After all, the PEK that is only 4 voices is selling for more and finds their customer. However, whereas the PEK has something unique, the sounds of the Prophet08 are pretty blend so far.

I personally am interested in it and applaud Dave Smith for listening to the market demands - bold steps once again. I think the price point is totally acceptable too.
However I really doubt it'll topple the Andromeda for sheer analogue bliss. And since you can get a second-hand Andy for less than $2000 without too much difficulty I doubt it's something I'd buy if I stumbled across and insane amount of cash and was forced to buy a new analogue poly.
Still until we see the specs and demo a unit it's not fair to dismiss it or praise it infinitely.
One thing is for sure though, I may not be interested in the near future but I'm sure there are plenty of people that'll eat this new product right up.

Dave, thank you for sharing the info with us. And, if you have the opportunity, please pass along my thanks to Dave Smith for taking the time and making the investment in designing instruments that dare to counter the all-too-common repackaging of the same old products. Such a passion is refreshing to see and should be applauded.
WD
P.S. I'm very much looking forward to reading the full specs and trying one out for myself.

Shipping?
Dave, when is it exactly shipping? Cause I'm on board for getting one already!
