Juno-6 Computer Control Conundrum

Post by CountFunkula » Sat Aug 18, 2007 9:56 pm

I am going to mod my juno-6 for some sort of computer control, either DCB or midi. I have calculated some costs for my proposed mods, and it would be slightly cheaper for me to mod the juno for DCB and get a DCB-midi converter...BUT, am I better off just biting the bullet and paying a little more to just do a straight midi mod?

I guess the synth once modified will only respond to note on and note off information?

Why not just get a Juno 60?

I did consider getting a JU-60, but I paid $125 US for my JU-6 and it's really grown on me...plus I don't really need patch memory.

Waveterm-
Thanks for the link. Just cracked open the juno to see if that particular mod kit will work. I'll let you all know.

*update*

It won't work on a JU-6. Damn.

It seems like a lot of work would be required to install computer control otherwise someone like Kenton would have offer a kit back when it was in vogue to midi retrofit your gear.

Are you going to install something that mimics the Juno 6's keyboard scanner?

It's really not a hard mod. The hardest part is deciding where to cut holes for the sockets. I believe the kenton kits all involve a circuit board that interfaces with the key scanning system for bidirectional note on/off info. It's just a matter of deciding if I want DCB (in case I ever get a JP-8 or something) or Midi.

soooo....what it really comes down to is midi or DCB for note on/off data...what would you choose? why?

I'd first vote for not doing any modification. Although there not exactly the same, if you want a Juno 6 with DCB, you get a Juno 60 and if you want a Juno 6 with midi, you get a Juno 106.

If you're set on putting some extra holes in your synth, I see no reason to use DCB.

akkk....ok...you're missing the point. I have a Juno-6 which I got for not that much money. It is cheaper for me to mod this particular synth for Midi or DCB than go out and track down and buy another juno.

Would you:
A) choose DCB for potential interfacing with other Roland DCB gear and use a Midi-DCB converter
or
B) go straight for midi because everything else uses it

-I can understand furrowed brows and wide nervous eyes regarding putting holes in vintage synths. I don't feel good about it either but came up with a resonable solution: the jack is going in the bottom of the synth. The plug placement isn't a problem because the juno sits on top of a 2-tier stand.

I'd rather have a Juno 6 than Juno 60 or 106. Maybe you can find someone like me and swap.
