No drum machines. That would be the sound of contact mics applied directly to drums. Flat, flat, flat. But it does sound amazingly just like Linn drums. I think the synth was a Roland RS-09. Micke would remember. There is a very fine article on the recording of this album at Sound On Sound. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/dec04/a ... tracks.htm

I recall someone saying the album was real heavy on the MiniKorg 700s, which I could believe. I think Faith also utilizes mostly the same album.

Robert, to my knowledge, doesn't utilize a LinnDrum until p**n.
Keys: Wurlitzer 200A, Nord Electro 2, Arp Omni 2, Yamaha DX-7 II FD, Casio VL-Tone 1, Roland JX-10

He did'nt use a LinnDrum on p**n either. On 100 years (the only song to feature a drummachine on that album) they used a Boss dr55 with 99% certainty.

Not true. p**n is basically all drum machine. Lol Tolhurst was pretty messed up during the recording of that album, so Robert used his drum machines, a Boss as you said, and a Roland. You could listen to the demos of p**n where he is playing with the drum machine. He still gave Lol credit, but that was the beginning of Robert's dislike of him, which five years later resulted in his expulsion of The Cure.

On "17 seconds" (rec. in early 1980) Matthew Hartley played a Mini-Korg 700S and a Roland RS-09 mk I*.

Afaik they also used a Korg 800 DV on Faith ('81) and p**n ('82).

Micke

* later replaced by a mk II

That i have a really hard time believing. I'm not saying you're wrong but i'm going to need more than just you saying so.

I took a good listen to it yesterday and can not believe you could make a drummachine sound like that in 82. I could be wrong though. It is pretty static drumming. It would be kinda cool if you're right but sofar i don't think so.

The drumming on p**n has the same sound and feel as the stuff on Seventeen Seconds and Faith. That really flat, thick, "drum in a vacuum" sound. Real drums that sound a lot like Linn Drums, especially the snare drum. "One Hundred Years" is obviously drum machine and I remember reading somewhere that Bob Smith plays the floor tom on "The Hanging Garden." The rest was Lol.
