I used to do it a lot back in the days. Though we mostly borrowed stuff from people we knew.
Do note that sampling a synth is not the same thing as having the synth itself. And making good samples takes forever. So it's a lot of work.
With that said even if it does'nt sound exactly like the original does'nt mean they're bad samples in themselves. I've gotten many cool samples out of old analog stuff.

what he said.
i remember, taking a Solina from my friend. meticulously sampling all notes.. forever.. after that a month passed before i had willpower to start editing individual note samples. after i've done first few, another Solina popped out for sale locally. i grabbed it immediatelly. end of story.
sampling is great, for example, when u have a modular or something like an MS-20 and want to record some analog drums, fx wierdness, bits n pieces as one-shot samples. but multi-sampling for polyphonic playing.. waste of time. if u can't tweak your filter on an OBXa you got nothing. also the sameness of sampled material always kills the organic tone.
i htink better approach is finish your arrangement with the stand-in synth, rent OBXa, play it and commit to tape. voila. most ppl do it this way.

I'd take a 80% emulation over a homebrewn sampled set any day, and cluster's idea of "renting at the last minute" is a good timesaver.
There's a nice OB Reaktor ensemble, use it as a stand-in of sorts, then get the real thing.

If you're looking at paying £75 to hire one to sample, you might as well try the demo of Sonic Projects' 'OP-X', which sounds pretty impressive. Buying that will be cheaper than hiring an Obie, you won't have the hassle of sampling and you will be able to create your own patches.

I didn't get where I am today by posting on internet forums.

I sampled several synths, as it is no effort at all with my sampler, it's fully automated.
I usually sample 'raw' sounds from the synths and then use the samplers filters, envs, lfos and modulation routings to create a 'new' synth.
With the tedu=ious work done by the sampler, it's actually quite fun.
But I would not go out and rent synths for this purpose.
