is the P8 pretty light to carry for that size of analogue ? looks nice and compact anyway.

it's compact - tucks into a small studio nicely.

Man I would love to get my hands on one of these. I thought Dave Smith could have thrown in some digital oscillators in addition to the analog ones like he did with the Evolver. I was a big fan of the hybrid sound of the Evolver. But I guess all analog oscillators has its up side too.

I miss my evolver and plan on picking one up again someday - the SQ-80 and the MnM do great wave and wavetable synthesis but the Evolver has an amazing sound that is unique to it. The all analog P8 is a dream that benefits with the clean signal path compared to the evolvers hybrid battlefield. I do love the sound of digital oscillators and analog filters.
I like turning the P8 and the SQ80 into a mega-hybrid/8 voice evolver-on-the-cheap as I play them stacked.

well that was the point of the prophet, to completely strip the evolver of any digital parts.
so it would kind of defeat the purpose to have the digital oscillators in it

Yes, although the new synth also adds new tonal qualities. I suspect we might have seen a cheaper rack version by the end of the year. Happy 2008 to all forumites.

Bloody h**l! Small studio but brim-full of goodness! You certainly know how to pick 'em.
Cheers, and a happy new year to all.

so much niftier to pack all your gear onto a couple of surfaces that way. all my bits and pieces just knocking around a big room on stands, feels like they're thousand miles away sometimes..

necessity breeds creativity! It's just 2 2tiered stands plus one generic table - I bought the wood shelves at home depot and one long floating shelf from Ikea. It's very flexable in that I can reconfigure it a few ways. I also restain myself to gear that will fit!
The P8 fits like a dream and I love it's sound and functions and dig it as my main controller.

top thinking mate, I should get a few shelves for my bits too.

Bliss - as the knobs send midi CCs and NRPN and I enjoy the keybed. I've had the P8 for a few months and play on it every day. I have one knob that is a little loose (not lateral just tension) from lots of tweaking - but I still think it's built like a tank. It makes playing my other synths an expressive experience.
I personally love the continuous controllers - when you turn them they just work on the sound immediately - no jumps. I find I rarely need to check the LCD for reference as my ears instruct me. I like quantization on the knobs and find that one long sweep can cover the full spread.
Everyone has their own preference for controllers/keyboards - I use the P8 as my main board for everything and it is my sonic workhorse as well.

cool to use an analog poly like that when everyone thinks all-digi for their controllers ..
