Dude, you have to ask yourself:MrFrodo wrote:Have any of you had the chance to compare the Prophet 08 with any of the original Sequential gear? For instance, I'd like to hear it compared with the Prophet T8 and P-600.
- Why would you want a Prophet-08 if you have a T8/5/10 or even P-600?
- Why would you want a T8/5/10 or (especially) a P-600 if you had a Prophet-08?
- Even if you wanted both, could you afford them?
- Finally, could you be arsed comparing them painstakingly with audio demos?
It's the modern Prophet - for people who either can't afford the old ones or are put off by the unreliability or lack of modern features of the previous models.
In short - I really doubt many people have more than one Sequential poly synth.

The tabletop version does address my issue with the rackmout Poly-Evolver. It's got plenty of knobs, whereas the Poly-Evolver module doesn't.
I can't wait to see if the mono version comes out.

My money's on no mono prophet 08, ever.
There's enough points of distinction between the P08 and the PEK to make it worth producing a different synth but the pricepoint for a mono Prophet 08 would be so close to the Evolver that it wouldn't be worth producing.
Notice the P08M has a different form factor to the PEK to further differenciate it so that potential buyers of one won't cannibalise sales of the other.

while i think differences btwn sci models aint that subtle, i agree that apart from some collectors ppl rarely have 2 - 3 big sci polysynths..OriginalJambo wrote:It's the modern Prophet - for people who either can't afford the old ones or are put off by the unreliability or lack of modern features of the previous models.

that being said, i was cheering for a desktop version of P08, and if they do get it at my local dealers and it turns out what i think it is.. i might pick it up if it wont be overpriced in europe (as usally imports are). think its pure n brite character would complement my P5 rev2 sound beautifully. so there u go, i could actually find use for more than one Dave Smith synth..
ymmv.

And if you go through with it then maybe you'd be kind enough to compare them?clusterchord wrote:that being said, i was cheering for a desktop version of P08, and if they do get it at my local dealers and it turns out what i think it is.. i might pick it up if it wont be overpriced in europe (as usally imports are). think its pure n brite character would complement my P5 rev2 sound beautifully. so there u go, i could actually find use for more than one Dave Smith synth..

however, checking out extensive tippler P8 demos and ssm P5 stuff ive posted a few weeks back should give you a very good idea of their respective characters and their difference.
i stumbled upon this 1 hour (!) long MP3 of Prophet'08 tweaking

damn I just spent my brownie points & budget on other gear...
I'd snap up the P8 desktop in a heartbeat.
