Novation Supernova II KB: quantities produced?

Post by garranimal » Wed Sep 26, 2007 5:28 pm

The pre-Focusrite era of Novation had a pretty cool synth called the Supernova II. Does anyone know how many of these keyboard versions were made? How many of the special Pro-X Platinum editions were made? I really want to know. I tried emailing them but they are a different company now and don't know.

BTW these have gotten pretty scarce on Ebay.

SN II's on eBay can be pretty scarce and streaky, and the synth seems to be more available across the pond than here in the colonies, esp. the KB (racks are less scarce). Folks are hanging on to them because they are dependable, are true workhorses, and (IMO of course) they do modeled analog better than any other company, even Waldorf (sorry Pighood) :D To me, the SN II represents the zenith of Novation synths; it's all been downhill since they pulled the plug

only was produced for 2-3 years max so unit #s likely won't be too far over 2000-3000. Mine says serial #10223 - but it's doubtful they sold over 10,000, but what do eye no.
If like you say 'Today's Novation' can't be bothered to keep production records, I'm guessing I have #223 of the bunch.

Were there not many more rack Supernova's than keys? That usually what is seen in the studios, shops and in signatures.
Come to think of it I can't remember ever seeing a non-rack for sale in a b&m retail music store. I bought mine sight unseen on the evilBay after liking the chorus and EGs on my friend's K-Station and after reading many testimonials. I was more than satisfied...

English made would be the obvious reason. Very scarce in some other places as well. Most people tend to hold onto them for the obvious reasons. I think a lot of people overlooked the SN range; in favour of Nova's, Nord's and Virii in their time because of? price tag? ignorance? Certainly in my mind the SNII was amazingly powerful for it's time. Especially versus the competition it was up against.

Totally agreed. The SNII's are absolute weapons. So glad I managed to pick up a basically brand new one after 8 years of lusting.

slightly OT

Hey Rusty,

How would you say the SN2's sound sits amongst the MKS, Juno, & the JP you have?
The basic SN2 sound always seems Juno-like to me, especially the bass register and the way the EGs mod the filter. Increase the filter OD and res and it gets harder and less sweet - more OBXa-like imo.

SNII is the cornerstone of my music project. I am also preparing a live show and don't want to lug too many boards around. I will be using SNII to replace sounds of Juno-106, jupiter, xpander etc....some of them sold and no longer with me. The rack versions seem more common...it may be feasible to get that just for the road and midi-up a cheap keyboard controller.

The SN II Pro rack is the only digital synth I find worthy of adding to my mostly analog kit (now that my A-Station is gone.) Deep deep deep. :D
