Moog LP SE

Post by JSRockit » Thu Sep 27, 2007 12:14 am

Well, I haven't professed my love for a synth in awhile, so... I have to say I am very happy with the Moog LP. As a few of you know I have owned the MEK, the Voyager, and an MFB Synth II...and was never truly happy with any of them.

With the MEK, I tended to go towards the digital side of the synth and add too many effects...when I just wanted some analog. My fault I know...but I just could not exercise constraint...and generally ended up with cool noise that I couldn't use in a song. MFB Synth II? Well, it sounded great...but MFB stuff is quirky and ultimately doesn't satisfy if you want a full size synth ala a vintage analog. Ok, so then there was the Voyager. I just felt that it was overkill for my needs, the money I spent always weighed on me, and it was too big to fit in a convenient space in the limited area where I make music. Shouldn't I have thought about this before buying it? Yeah...of course...but GAS gets you. I tried the LP and the Voyager at the same time when I bought the Voyager. The Voyager just seemed so much cooler side by side. However, after I used it for awhile...I realized it is ultimately just a monosynth and serves a very limited role in my music. I really think I like digital stuff better than analog (monomachine, machinedrum). That said, I'm glad I finally got a 2 osc analog that fits my needs and skill level. Should have bought this instead of the Voyager and kept the MEK last year. Of well, you regret stuff sometimes. I don't regret getting rid of the Voyager though...it was a stupid GAS purchase. The LP was a smart purchase.

Something in me warmed greatly to the LP, and didn't to the Voyager... if that's any help :-) I think the LP is a more realistic synth somehow, more friendly and easier to use and also has great tone! Kind of reminded me of a better sounding Source with more knobs!

Congrats on the new synth! I'd like to hear about your experiences with sequencing the LP from the monomachine - I'm running my RME from the MC808 mostly as it's a bit more conventional but I'm always looking for new tricks with the Elektron gear as it shines with monos.

I've always thought the LP + CP251 seemed like an affordable set up for someone who wanted to dabble in semi modular territory. In order to do that with the RME you need to get an additional break-out CV box - Toss in some Moogers and we're talking about a lot of money compared to The LP + CP251 - not as much.

Have fun and put that LP to work!!

Way to go, JS - glad to hear you like it so much.

Not to take anything away from the Voyager, because it is a monster synth with a lotta control and a great sound.

But the LP is more like the Mini imo than the Voyager, for some obvious and not-so-obvious reasons.

Simplicity, no knob quantization, honkin' overdrive, and easier portability. Sort of a cross between the Prodigy, Source and Mini, but with a few modern goodies that never get in the way.
They should have called the Voyager just that, and left the 'Mini' out of it altogether. Oh well, marketing and layout/styling dictate. It's still awesome.

The Voyager is more like a 'Maxi-Moog'!

Congrats JS on the LP. As others have said before, there is just something about it. It's almost as if the MnM and the LP were made for each other.

Linked is a little demo ("MonoMachine Arp demo")of the MnM sequencer running an XB09, then an arpped LP, then an internal MnM sound. JS, you might have already heard this one, but Megawatt might be interested in it. Of course, there is utter lack of musical talent  .

congrats js, among the crowd, it's easy to get another synth but it's not easy to get the right one. seems like you found one already.

Yes, it has been hard... but it's been fun anyway. However, now I'm just looking for the tools to do the job. I think it is a keeper. I haven't sequenced it yet...but will soon.

Cool, thanks for the clip. Yeah, I will get into using the MnM's sequencer to sequence the LP soon.

I had the MEK and thought it was smashing, but the brutal simplicity of the LP won me over completely. It's just a lovely instrument - a clean and tidy interface and a sound that begs to be played.

Glad you're enjoying it!

cool man. i had actually been wondering how you have been getting along with your purchase/move to the LP, JS. there are plenty of times that i wonder which one i would buy, the voyager or the lp, and plenty of times that the voyager is just such a beauty and sooo tempting. but then it seems that there are a lot of people who are really enjoying their lp's. either way i havent made a purchase for either yet. it seems more analog monos are just popping up, and then im contstatnly telling myself i dont need to buy any more synths. "just make music with what you've got!" and thats not to say that im not happy with my gear, im very very happy, and very grateful for what i have. i love it, but damn the little kid in me wants to play with some new toys!

Yeah, I went through that stage before I was ready... bought lots of toys, didn't know how to incorporate them into my music....made lots of noise, annoyed the neighbors, sold them. Nothing wrong with buying as long as you know how to use them all and they let you have fun. These days, I like to keep it simple with the new stuff I buy and put all my efforts into learning my Monomachine and Machinedrum... and recording and mixing techniques.

yeah i feel like i have my gear working really well as a studio. and instead of say buying another mono, ive been investing my money into gear like compressors and pre-amps. also trying to get my recording down better, and been trying to get a solid live show set up, which has been going well. and so as much as id love to kind of buy something, and if im not happy with it, just sell it, i dont think i have the time for it right now.
i as well use the monomachine and machinedrum, and they are fantastic. really insparational and so quick to bang out some beats or melodies to. and i need that quickness working with a guitarist you know.

I said it once and I'll say it again: if LP SE is good enuf for Geddy L, it's good enuf for me :D But unlike U Rockit I kept my MEK (sold the desktop) and love how it mixes well with my CP-251'd LP and my other analog a Red Square mkII. :D The Voyager is just too much--figger if I drop $3,200 on something musical it's going to be a vintage guitar--altho the RME might be worth a look-see one day, seen those used for around $14-1500 USD. :D

Yeah, there are two pieces I regret selling...the MEK and the Sidstation. The MEK could still be in my future...but the sid is way too expensive now. Oh well.

RME + Mobius has gotta be the nun's nuts.

I've fired off the LP from the 777's sequencer and it's just amazing. for example Floyd O.T.R. @ ~170 bpm w/ Mobius' 2ms MIDI & LPs 1ms EG's it's....mmmmmm, good....mix in some 777 oscs....run through the Sherman - look out kiddies.
