Little Phatty - RAC is ripping me a new one!

Post by nadafarms » Mon Oct 08, 2007 2:47 am

Here it goes another new LP owners raving thread...

Ok, all this time I thought the Little Phatty was just an overpriced synth with limited sounds and not many features... wow I was wrong.

It just sounds sooooo much better than I thought it would and better than everything else I have touched including Studio Electronics monos (though they still kick a*s, have better features and I do miss them).

For some reason when I tried LP it in a music store months ago I wasn't impressed. I don't know what I was smoking that day, its like it makes all the sounds I wish other synths would.

The 2 moog prodigies I had don't even touch the LP.

Hands up for RACtm technology! The only modern mono with no midi stepping? Some people don't even notice midi stepping... yall crazy! I find its %100,000 more inspiring for me to play a pure analog synth with perfect smooth filter sweeps, moog actually made it happen! Thanks BOB, its a dream come true and the one synth I think I will actually keep!

I find myself sitting down to play music about 3x as much now with the LP and it has totally re-inspired my love of synths and music. \:D/

Does anyone know if the voyager has this same RAC?

I just got one last week, and all I can say is... HOLY s**t! After many years, and owning plenty of analogs... this is my first Moog, and now, my favorite analog. My ARP Solus is now neglected.

I love mine too. It is so easy to get good, usable sounds...and is very comfortable to play and get around. The only bad thing is that it made me realize how bad the Microkorg (a cheap synth I formerly loved) is in comparison.

The Voyager has all analogue controls but not the RAC.

I'm with ya nada. It's just so easy to counjure up good usable sounds. As far as RAC I couldn't agree more. To me it's a real let down to hear stepping within an analog synth or synths ment to mimic analog (VA's). Yeah I guess it's desireable for some people but not I!

Finally some others that share my feelings for the LP! :) It has been totally bashed by others I've discussed it with nowadays. One idiot even thought it sounded way too much like a VA. Analog-talibans don't like new analog gear... Sad - but it's their loss.

Just yesterday I re-created some Kraftwerk sounds and it amazed me how close this thing can sound to a Minimoog. It also nails the bass sound from Air's Kelly, Watch the Stars - a sound that I love. :)

I'm with you 100%. The Voyager is a great synth, and I'm saving for one to accompany my Little Phatty, but it just doesn't (in my limited experience) do the aggressive, ripping tones like the LP. The Minimoog may do them better and fatter, but you can't walk out of Guitar Center with a brand new warrantied Minimoog for 1200 bucks. Plus patch saving and midi. I think Moog got it just right with the LP. Just my opinion of course.

It doesn't sound like any VA I've owned. That's just silly...unless the higher end VAs are that good. I think some people just like vintage analog...so the LP rubs them the wrong way...plus it doesn't have one knob per function. After falling in love with the Monomachine long ago and the LP recently...I could really care less about Vintage anymore.

LP is in a class of its own, its like the only modern vintage synth... heh heh

Oscillators rule in fatness all over most analogs... the snappiness of the filters and envelopes damn! I feel like I'm actually playing an acoustic instrument and keyboard just begs to be played, so responsive.

I will say that in the 1st two hours of playing I got two "fatal error keyboard overload" messages which forced me to restart the synth.

And oscilllator 2 is flat, I tried oscillator2 calibration 3 times and it is still flat. Anyone help with that? Will a note calibration fix this?

I emailed moogmusic tech support last week and no reply... also I tried signing up for their forum but still waiting to be approved by the mods or whatever...

So I am feeling a little neglected but hey they're busy making my new favorite synth, the osc2 out of tuneness is bugging me, but not stopping me from spending all my time playing it.

Thank god I got my LP while I'm still single! 8)

So there is no stepping on the Voyager? Some different form of analog control pre-RAC?

RAC is a Moog innovation where the knobs act like digital but are actually analogue. For example: in my Voyager if I have a patch where the cutoff is all the way on and then switch to a patch where it's half-way on, there will be an audible jump when I move the cutoff knob. Phatty's RAC solves that. There's no jump after you change a patch. You even get to choose three different ways the knob will track. No, there is no digital stepping with the Voyager. Eventually you learn to adapt your playing to it's knob jumping.

And there is a difference in sound between the Phatty and Voyager. They both are Moogy, but the Phatty definitely is more agressive. To me the Voyager is very smooth, but of course it can sound nasty if that is what you want.

I've had a couple of error messages on my Phatty, but they are only when I trigger it's CV gate via my Voyager's VX351 CV output. Other than that, it performs flawlessly.

Thanks, I don't mind knob jumps with parameters, its the stepping that worries me on most analogs. Sounds like the voyager will be my cup of tea... someday.

Were you trying to register with Moogspace? That's overkill for general tech support. Try registering on the general forums;

http://www.moogmusic.com/forum/

You can also call Moog directly @ 828-251-0090.

Try emailing Heidi at Moog. After waiting several months, and getting no replies, I was refered to Heidi, and she got me on the same day.
