Help me find some 80's synths :)

Post by hageir » Mon Oct 15, 2007 3:26 pm

DEMO!!>>>http://www.box.net/shared/31zmol9ga4<<< DEMO!!

1. Typical 80's Pad/Detuned(?) sounding Lead
2. Nice 80's Hi-Passy, Crisp pad -> Prophet?
3. African Wood drums (typical fairlight/emulator library stuff) + Rising/Ghost pad
4. Amazing/Awesome, sequenced Short decay/Fast attack, Ploppy/Hollowish synth bass.
5. Ploppy Bass II + Detuny/Paddy Lead.
6. Ploppy Bass III + Another Detuny/Paddy Lead.

I know that these sounds are quite basic, but I'm tired of looking for the perfect synth..
I'll rather ask one of you guys who's had 'em all :)

Which synths do I need to get these sounds EXACTLY?
I'm thinking: Prophet 5, Minimoog + a Fairlight system..

80's? My initial thoughts:

Prophet 5 or Jupiter 8 or OB-8
DX7
Fairlight or maybe an emulater for less $
I know minimoogs were used throughout the 80's but I tend to associate the sound more strongly with the 70's. Don't skimp on the early digital FX.

maybe you didn't see the link, but I made an audio file of what I was talking about..

but yeah, essentially, its the prophet+jupiter+fairlight gang.

how do you get that hollow-ploppy sound into a bass patch?
I can get pretty close on my evolver..

You mean the slightly wood-block sounding bass? If I'm thinking of the same part is sounds like a a wood block-ish sound layered on a jupiter-ish bass sound. Most of this music sounds really DX to me. In fact I think you could replicate the majority of that music on a DX-7 alone (or more easily on FM7 or 8.

Some of that sounds very 'D Train' to me-cool clips. I love those punchy chord sounds with the vibrato. Im sure the gurus here will know what they are likely to be....Defo some DX7 keys in those end clips

based on your mp3 link, you should find out what synths were used for the soundtracks to Beat Street and Breakin' and go buy those. no joke...your comp song had all the elements of that early to mid 80's breakdance/pop 'n' lock scene, which is not a bad thing...

i agree that there is alot that can be done with a DX. even a 4-op FM synth would be a good start to getting those sounds and you can get the hardware cheap if not wanting to go the soft-synth route. also, being an M1 owner for so long, i can almost hear some of the more "organic" sounds coming from an M1 or D50...

i dont know what your trust-fund looks like, but if its anything like mine, a Juno and an M1, along with your DX and Emax, would very much do those songs justice without breaking the bank...

just my 2 cents...
Micron - MMT8 - AX60 - MPC2000 - MPC500 - S2800 - CZ3000 - SK1 (x2) - SQ80 - EA1 - ER1 - mK - Poly 800 II - BSR - Alpha Juno2 - JV1010 - TR505 - MicroQ - DX21 - RT123

some great sounds in there...some of them are again what id be after...

reminds me of paul hardcastles tracks...

some good worbley chords sounds def an ob8...

some dx7..but i had one,and felt let down by the sounds..i think you'd

need to process the s**t out of one of them, to get anything decent..

and that alone is time and money....

my route would be sampler based i feel from specific cd collections..

hope the thread continues as im just as interested...good luck..

The first one is "The Smurf" from 1982, I always thought it was just another analog polysound, Jupiter or Prophet-5

Clavia: /Nord Lead 2x/
Roland: /AX-Synth/D-50/SH-201/

yeah it's an awesome album :) (sticky situation)
I just figured out one thing, on the back it says:
Louie Oxley: Prophet 5 Synthesizer on "Go For It" & "The Smurf"

but what's the name of the ploppy-hollowish bass synth patch/preset on the last clips, because it's on a ton of different songs, so it's definitely a preset..

yeah, I'm thinking about getting a creamware pro12/minimax
but I'm not sure because of all the bugs in the os and that the build-quality is supposedly crappy (and the company went bankrupt=no fixes)

but I'm seriously thinking about getting myself a fairlight cmi IIx system, probably next summer when I start working..
what's the street price for a IIx?

I reckon about four - five thousand in the UK..
They are still not cheap.
I would still like one.

How does one go about programming those Oberheim warbly pads on a 2-osc analog poly?

Sorry for the jack, but I don't want to start a new thread about it and encroach on princefan's territory
