all the monomachine owners out there
did any of you get the keyboard? does the keyboard offer anything a midi controller doesnt?
I own an SFX-6. I think the keyboard version is a little easier to work with but not much. You've got all the step led's above the keys which I find useful when making a sequence. Other than that and the fact that it looks cool I think you'd do alright w/ a decent midi controller. There relatively hard to find now as they only made 500 of the keyboard versions.
Re: all the monomachine owners out there
I don't think it does. I just happened to be flicking thru the 'assign' menu last night on my SFX-60 and what would be the joystick functions can also be controlled via MIDIcc. The pattern selection via the keyboard can also be assigned to notes on an external MIDI keyboard.wiss wrote:did any of you get the keyboard? does the keyboard offer anything a midi controller doesnt?
There maybe some other features that I don't know about but I I prefer the handy size of the SFX-60 which is great to have on your lap with headphones or easy to shove in a rucksack to take to jam sessions with mates ect.

Unless there's some increased resolution with the internal joystick but all I see is a MIDI controller no. under each stick direction on the edit pages in which case something like a Novation LE should work just as well in theory.JSRockit wrote:I thought there was something special about how the joystick works on the keyboard model...that isn't easy to emulate with most controllers... is that not the case?
This thread over here is stating that the Monomachine is 3 axis...instead of the standard 2 axis.Soundwave wrote:Unless there's some increased resolution with the internal joystick but all I see is a MIDI controller no. under each stick direction on the edit pages in which case something like a Novation LE should work just as well in theory.JSRockit wrote:I thought there was something special about how the joystick works on the keyboard model...that isn't easy to emulate with most controllers... is that not the case?

The Novation's pad is 4 axis if I understand this correctly as you can have two MIDIcc's assigned to each X and Y axis plus there's the joystick.

I got the SFX-6. I found a good deal on a used one, so I went for it. I paid about the same as I would have for a brand new 60. I generally like my instruments to be self-contained, and while obviously you could emulate all the functions of the keyboard/joystick with a MIDI controller, it's nice to have it all right there in the machine itself.
And I'm not gonna lie, I totally dig the cool factor of the SFX-6. It has such a quirky, modern aesthetic. And it is destined to be a rare bird. Lots of cool points for the SFX-6.
That being said, I definitely have my days where I would like to have the SFX-60 for transportability and desk-space saving purposes. If you have limited space or plan to gig with the MnM a lot, I would say you should probably definitely go with the SFX-60. I do know, however, that there is a pelican case that fits the SFX-6 perfectly, or at least, that's what I've been told over at the elektron-users forum. I don't have a case myself.
I also wanted to take this opportunity to comment on the sound of the MnM. I know it has taken some flack around here at times. I was actually reading through some old threads on here about the MnM just yesterday seeing if I might pick up a few new tips (which you always do with the Elektron gear), and read some less than endearing comments about the MnM sound.
I run my MnM through a Great River MP-2NV into my interface, and the MnM literally jumps out of my speakers. And I mean literally. It has a certain depth of sound to me. It cuts, and really jumps out from the monitors, if that makes any sense (think three-dimensional). It doesn't sound like an analog synth, per say, but I'm not sure why anyone would expect it to, although it can rip pretty hard.
Cheers.

The keyboard version looks awesome. Someone is selling one on CL in Van Nuys? The person listed it as retail price but I mailed him and apparently he is selling it for someone and doesn't really know whats up. If I hadn't bought a new sfx-60 from AH I would've made that guy an offer for sure.
The only minor downside for me is when I came home with my sfx-60 I found that we didn't have any midi keyboards.
Luckily my bro has a CZ-101 but again having a keyboard isn't that necessary unless you are going to perform live and play it or you just prefer to work that way.
*ahem* look at it it looks so slick!!1 The sharp lines; the aluminum look; You can kill someone with it. The $600 dollar difference scared me off though. Mostly because it was creeping close to the P'08 and because I could only afford the price of a Sfx-60.
