Buchla Music Easel

Post by synapsecollapse » Wed Oct 24, 2007 6:22 pm

Ive been trying to look around online and figure out what made this synth sound so different, and the closest i got was on buchla's website they spoke of a "complex oscillator, developed through computer aided simulation studies, is a rich source of complex audio spectra" but i cant find anything about the oscillator or the synth's architecture (modular? semi modular?) and while i know the entire buchla range is ridiculously our of reach (the modern 200e series looks amazing, but i dont think dropping 10k + on a modular system is going to happen any time soon, for me at least) i am still rather curious.

The Buchla Music Easel is two Buchla 200 series modules in a case: the 218 and the 208. Info can be found here:

...and the manual can sometimes be found on the web:

Moved from the other thread of the same title...

I had the smart luck to attend a small gig at a tavern where the band's opening act was a single man tweaking what appeared to be a portable modular synth in a suitcase; I introduced myself as a fellow electronic musician afterward, and he indeed was the proud owner and user of a . . .

Buchla Music Easel

WoW! Lots of tinkling patterns and swells and swoops were heard from this pastel-colored beauty. The owner gave me his card, so I hope to visit him soon to maybe get a first-hand glimpse, some photos, maybe even a lesson or two.

Anyone else here ever encounter a modular synth in action in such an informal setting?

i know the guy who wrote the manual- i'll see if i can get some samples around xmas. i've used much original 200/300 series Buchla, they are fantastically strange instruments.
