True Next-Generation Source: THE ATC-X!

Post by MrFrodo » Mon Nov 05, 2007 10:18 pm

Okay, I've brought this up many times in the past. What is the true follow-up to a monosynth like the Moog Source?

The Moog Music people went to a certain length to toat the LP as the 21st-century version of the Source. Somehow, I never saw it. I like the LP, but it's got too many realtime conrollers.

No, I think that Studio Electronics cornered that market at the end of the 90's with the unveiling of the original ATC module. And, they got even closer in 2003 with the ATC-X. Think about it. The ATC-X comes in optional blue. That, plus the general layout of the front panel (the membrane switches and alpha dial) has always reminded me of the Source.

Forget that it has no keyboard and no Moog name. It still suffices.

Any others out there, other than the ATC and LP?

What about the FR XS, although admittedly, I tend to think of it as being MS-20 like in concept for no particular reason...

I'm very interested in the ATC-X myself.

Does anyone know some good demos? Also some demos demonstrating the different filters (Eg playing the same patch on different filters etc.)

If I had gotten it instead of the Voyager (I still don't regret it), I'd be able to demonstrate the filters.

I had an SE1x, but thought for the money-The ATC1 with Moog filter would cover all my squelch needs-for almost half the price second hand these days. And it sure does-I prefer it over the SE1x-it has better envelopes and even tho the SE1 had more knobs-you inevitably had to quickly delve into the menus as it was kind of 'Virus-like' in that aspect.....I prefer editing the ATC-as there are no menus-and everything is logically laid out on the front panel-just a simple button press and bobs your uncle. Im selling the SE1x and keeping the ATC.

Im still just getting to know it now-and its very cool. It can get pretty crazy! Need to roll of the Bass on this one! Not sure if it was specifically designed to follow up a Source-it just happens to use buttons and have Moog characteristics-moot point really...?

Phatty prob has quicker env and some other advantages but vice versa-both very nice synths :)

The Studio Electronics site is filled with 'm and frankly I haven't heard more (musically) awesome demos yet. It's glitchjazz with analogs.

The Nicolino's Cut demo doesn't work (wrong link) so you have to use this:

The music is good but they're rather crowded and feature loads of SE products so it's rather har to single out a single synth. I guess they all sound related though.

And this is a bad thing? Does somebody out there actually like the Source because, rather than in spite, of it's lack of real-time control? Are people out there pining for membrane panels, really?

I loved the sound of my Source while I had it, but I would've traded it for something comparable that had knobs and and buttons (real buttons, not that membrane where you're never sure if you've pushed something successfully until you see the display change), in a minute.

That was ust pretend conservativism at work. There's nothing wrong with more realtime controllers.

ATC-X is pretty damn sweet. Really easy to map all parameters of your midi controller to it.

Only problem, there is stepping in the filters when using in realtime. Which is why I'm more of a LP kind of guy. I sold my atc-x but will probably pick up another soon.

One thing I got to say is where the h**l else are you going to find an ARP2600 filter?

When I had my ATCX I barely used anything but the 2600 filter, you could make all those sweet star wars sounds! They need to put arp2600 in all SE-1s and forget that damn OB filter, also make a damn ms20 filter while your at it!

The distortion is the bomb and way better sounding than the Moog LP's overdrive, though I guess they are different because the LP has filter overdrive and the atcx has actual distortion.

Still you can get the nastiest sounds out of the atcx! plus ring mod! Christ sake it has more features than any other mono true analog out there!

Why did I sell mine!? NOooooooo

Really wish they'd kept the Omega-2. 2U rack, lotsa knobs, 2 monosynths in a compact package. Cheaper than the 2-voice Omega-8 IIR.

Was hoping Turnkey would sell me their display model cheap, but I presume a member of staff got it.

I agree about the ARP filter, on the ATC preferred it to the Moog (sacrilege! :) ).

Okay, we're endorsing the ARP filter, Moog filter, overdrive & ring mod, and we're killing the Oberheim filter. Now, what's the "verdict" on the Roland 303 filter?

What features was actually added in the atc-x as oposed to the atc-1? I know they removed a cv interface, moved the filters inside the machine and gave it a new paint job, but anything else? Does the original have distortion?
