It really bothers me when my gear gets damaged (even though most of what I own is not particularly expensive or rare, particularly when compared with what some of the people here have...). So for a live project in which I foresee a lot of potential damage, I was thinking of just using a disposable generic controller keyboard with some cheap unit I can leave on the side.
Considering how affordable hardware samplers are now, I figured that might be a good option, but I want to be able to tweak (and preferably completely mangle) the sound live via the controller knobs. Any of those old samplers have resonant filters, LFOs, and/or interesting/decent effects that are easily assigned to knobs (and hopefully a minimal loading time)?
I also realize that the devo would be more or less perfect for this, as would perhaps the micromodular, but I was hoping that I could find a fun little noisemaker for $200 or less. Perhaps something ridiculously cheap because of its knoblessness (albeit user-friendly assignability to the controller's knobs). I don't really care about "warm" or "fat." Much more interested in brutal or nasty. Mono is fine, poly doesn't hurt.
really cheap rack/desktop unit for sound mangling...

the micromodular is a great choice. You can assign more CC from your controller to get more control.
