Cheap synth modules

Post by I Am the Walrus » Mon Nov 26, 2007 9:37 am

What are some cheap older digital synths? I guess cheesy '80s to early '90s B-Horror movie soundtrack sounds is what I'm after. DX7 tubular bells, Angelo Badalamenti string pads... lots of digital FM/LA stuff and/or lo-fi sampled waveforms.

I don't have room for another keyboard. Rackmount is okay. Half-rack or "desktop" type synths are even better.

The Kurzweil K2000 seems pretty nice for the money.

But since he said he didn't need another HUGE keyboard, I guess that one's out of the loop already.

For Badalamenti string pads, Roland D-110 and MKS-70. MKS-50 (alpha juno in a 1U rack) is great too.

Kurzweil k2000R (or RS if you want a GREAT sampler too...)
Roland D50
Yamaha TX802 - TG77
Waldorf Microwave2... (if you want to spend half the price of a Blofeld...)

All these are very cheap today... and they all worth the money... K2000R in primis.

Get all them (see my sign) and enjoy...

I have an Alpha Juno and indeed, it does do good strings.

Sorry for posting in the wrong forum AGAIN. I don't post to this discussion board often, but I'll figure out the rules eventually.

Without a doubt the DX200. I got one two weeks ago and haven't slept since!

The U110/220s are great because they can be had for ridiculous cheap. The keyboard DXes are overpriced at this point, I think. A lot of people seem to pass on TX802s, and they're great boxes.

What about an late 90's emu racksynth?
Morpheus, Audity, Proteus..
They're dirt cheap, powerful to program and single RU.

Widely available under $100 80s cheese:

Yamaha FB01, TX81Z
Roland MT32
Kawai K1m
Ensoniq SQ-R
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

TG-55s run anywhere from $100 - $180. U-110s are about the same.

I had a D-110 once - cheap, but one of the hardest modules to figure out.

I do own a Roland MKS-70 which I paid $360 for. Not cheap - but a great string machine - perhaps the best analog string synth out there. Here's a (not so good) sample: http://www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?PID=959660&t=8830

I also have a Yamaha TX802 which I quite like. I got lucky and picked mine up for $90. Several TX802 factory patches: http://www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?PID=920933&t=2440 Another with one patch sequencing guitar type arpeggio: http://www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?PID=947269&t=2440

Then there's the Roland MKS-50 which used to go for around $150. Suddenly, they seem to be fetching over $200. MKS-50 sample: http://www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?PID=888355&t=2440

+1, I like the cheesy/hybrid string sound of this desktop module.
