This is precisely the type of inspiration behind the artist Boards of Canada. Man, I remember being a kid in the 80s and CBC and TVO was full of haunting music like this with weird imagery. At the end it always said something about "brought to you by the boards of canada".

If people want to hear the "real" boards of canada, they should dig through some old 70s & 80s government funded canadian documentaries & programs.

Those were the good [Moog] days in Canada:

I know some of the older forum members may not be able to relate to this, but what about some classic video game scores? I guess it's kind of disqualifying that all game BGM was composed electronically before the CD-ROM era, but some examples of classic synth-ing/good electronic composition can be found.

The Sega Mega Drive/Genesis basically had the equivalent of a Yamaha DX7 onboard:

Then the CD-ROM era allowed game music composers to use real instruments if the wanted to, but that didn't keep them away from their old standby; the synth:

Electronic music in video games lives on today:

Yeah, OK...I've started a new thread.

I'll be some FM fans could fill pages just with Genesis/Mega Drive and late 80s/early 90s arcade soundtracks alone...

Getting back on topic....not sure if this has been mentioned yet but here goes

Vince DiCola - Rocky IV (1985)

I was googling around and found this gearlist on a forum (possibly posted by DiCola himself?)

Moog Modular
EMU Modular
OBERHEIM Modular
ROLAND Jupiter 8
YAMAHA DX-7
YAMAHA TX-816 (8 DX-7's in a rack)
OBERHEIM OB-X
SEQUENTIAL CIRCUITS Prophet VS
MOOG MiniMoog
PPG Wave
EMU Emulater 2
AKAI S-950
AKAI S-1000
ROLAND D-50 and (D-550)
KORG M1R

That's a very impressive list of synths indeed but there are obviously quite a few errors in there.

Considering that the music was recorded around the fall of '85 the following stuff could not have been
used in Rocky IV:

SCI Prophet VS: circa summer 1986
Roland D-50/550: 1987
Akai S-950 and S-1000: 1988
Korg M1R: 1988-89

Also, I'm not sure what's meant by "Oberheim modular". I guess it could refer to a modularized Oberheim 4-voice
or 8-voice polyphonic synth but am not sure.

Some guy over at the Gearslutz forum recently posted this seemingly unfinished version
of the song "Push It To The Limit" from Scarface, and was wondering what synth was
used for the bassline:

Well, I can tell you it is Jupiter 8 on the bass and the same synth does the "Good, the bad & ugly"
flute thing. The sitar before the guitar solo was an Emulator sample.

Time to bump this one up with some pieces from Albator 78, the French language version of Leiji Matsumoto's Space Pirate Captain Harlock.

This music was all created for the French dub, replacing the original Japanese music.
Keys: Realistic Concertmate 500, Korg K25, Korg Micro X

Guits: '86 Fender Japan '50s Reissue Strat, '80 Aria Pro II TS-300 Thor Sound

Beverly Hills Cop (1984):

Fletch (1985):

Top Gun (1986):

The Running Man (1987):

Tango & Cash (1989):

The American version of the samurai film "Shogun Assassin" (1980) has a pretty cool electronic score by
Mark Lindsay (former lead singer for Paul Revere and the Raiders) and W. Michael Lewis:

Synths used includes a giant E-mu modular synthesizer.

That is a great image and track of the E mu modular.

In electronic music, sequencers are as important as synths.

Yes what an awesome looking/sounding polyphonic modular system.

That requires a large studio space, to say the least.
