What VA should I buy? (or should I?!)

Post by Supekutoru » Thu Nov 29, 2007 11:25 pm

Hi
Im looking for one more synth to be the final piece that completes my studio. I have a Juno 106, MS20, Jomox xBase 09, Machinedrum, Genelec 8040s, Live 6 and a pile of Vst effects. So now Im looking for something different that compliments the rest. I have been looking into Virtual Analogs like the Virus B and C, Alesis Ion and the Nords. But seeing as I live in Ireland it's impossible to test anything out first hand. So which one is best?
I suppose it always comes down to what someone is looking for personally. Well, that's always an awkward thing to describe but here it goes....
ok, Im not really looking for bass or pads as such, as I have that pretty much covered (106, MS20). I (try to!) make electro in the vein of Rother/Boris Divider. I want crisp, sharp, melodic arpeggiated rhythms that's heard in a lot of this kind of stuff (I think Boris actually might use a Virus but not sure). Its sort of the SH-101 sound im talking about but I want something that isn't so limited...
So should I go for a VA or something else? Have about €600-700 to spend

I hope that I've made it somehow clear what it is Im looking for! Any help much appreciated

Cheers

Waldorf Blofeld would fit the bill nicely.

Waldorf...i had never really heard of them before the last couple of days but they seem to be highly regarded. must do some research. but this is definitely the VA you would recommend over the Virus and Nords?

Yes, I just sold a Nord G2 so I can get a Blofeld. In terms of tonal character, versatility and price, go with the Blofeld. It's not just a Waldorf MicroQ based VA, It's also a Waldrof Microwave XT based wavetable synth. It's a crisp, sharp, melodic arpeggiated rhythm beast. And It's only 399. Euros.

Check out the specs: http://www.modularsquare.com/edito/Blofeld_teaser.pdf

What are you going to do with the ~$900 change?

have not had much luck with the Dorf over the years, but I tell ya that's one tempting little silver beastie there. that it has ALL the wavetables is a strong sell point--and the price, I dont think its over $600 US. Wow. :D

Thanks for the link... very amusing and informative

Get a Virus. You can't go wrong with it...one of the best line of synths ever. Tons of arp patterns and options, very crisp. Actually if one word could be chosen to describe the Virus for me it would be "crisp". The Blofeld to me looks like the Virus TI lite version anyway...its cheaper though. I'd have to play one to pass judgement though.
JP-8080, Virus B, TG-77, JD-990, D-550, XV-5080, CS1x, Matrix 1000, SE-1, SuperNova II Pro Rack, MKS-50, EMX-1, TX-802, Nord Rack 2X, Korg RADIAS
