VERY COOL Suicide Video!

Post by Ezzo » Sun Dec 16, 2007 5:54 am

The best thing about this video is the applause after they finish the song. Anybody know what synths are being used here? Are they different than what was used for the record?

Off-hand, I can't recall the names of what they used, but that's a combo organ and rhythm unit they used. It wasn't until they got involved with The Cars that they got a Prophet 5 - all the early stuff was real low-end gear.

They were great, weren't they? Apparently they just did another short tour, too.

They used to play with a second hand Farfisa organ, some rhythm box manufactured by a bowling bowl pin company called Seagrams, then a handful of Electro Harmonix effects. According to their biography book, the rhythm box was bought second hand by two parents who's teenage daughter committed suicide.

Like another poster said, it wasn't till Ric Ocasek took them under his wing that they started using the P5 which is heard on the second album and "Dream Baby Dream" single. Prior to him getting them that synth, Rev and Vega were very poor and living in some public art studio, so nearly everything of theirs was on the verge of falling apart. A true sound of the streets.

Watching stuff like this makes me feel extremely guilty for going through nearly a dozen different synths/drum machines in the past couple of years (in my defense they where all cheapies or moderately priced). These guys accomplished so much with so little, its truly humbling.
We'll always be remembered, we'll always be dismembered.

f**k they're awesome, such a big influence on everything I do.

That was a c**p version though, the mix was shocking.

I'd like to be on the same bill as them some time, maybe next year.

I'm surprised this thread hasn't been flooded by emo/goth kids looking for "cool suicide videos" on Google already. Honestly, read the topic.

I can get a pretty good Ghost Rider bass with my Farfisa Combo Compact and a tube amp cranked to 11.
Amazing duo.

I've actually gotten a few messages from users on You Tube asking me to take down the two videos I've put up of Suicide, claiming it was not a good influence to other users...?

I'm as confused as it sounds. Perhaps they thought I had actual footage of suicide victims or something.

As for the poster saying this:
"That was a c**p version though, the mix was shocking."

There's a huge difference between what gets recorded in the studio and what Suicide do for live performances. Their live sound is generally improvised and intentionally messy sounding to irritate the audience, which is why they are known as one of the first "punk" groups, although even punks hated them.

I know that and I stand by what I wrote. The vocal was too high, you couldn't hear the organ properly.

This one's way better:

Yeah they are probably part of the morality mafia that surfs the web looking for immoral things and send mails to have them removed without even looking first. Because they wouldn't want to look at an actual suicide video themselves, naturally. So they just assume it is the real deal.

have read several interviews with rev and vega both claiming that their sound was a farfisa with a broken output routed through a bunch of pedals to juice up the sound.

anybody interested should try out rev's solo albums. vega's solo albums are good too, 'jukebox babe' being just as memorable as anything from suicide's reportoire

I'm pretty sure Angelo Badalamenti was around and making music long before Suicide were, don't know how likely it is that he'd have been ripping them off.
