NL2x versus Virus KB, C, etc.

Post by Music*aL » Sat Dec 22, 2007 12:59 am

I have both an NL2x and a Virus KB. Although I haven't spent a lot of time with either due to a variety of reasons, I will hopefully have some time to dig into them soon.

By way of background, I play jazz fusion and so, arpeggiators and the like aren't that important to me, and neither is multitimbrality. I don't sequence much of anything.

If you were reaching for something (leads and pads) not necessarily analog sounding, but, more in the realm of new sounds that are interesting and organic, which synth would you reach for.

BTW, I love my Virus, it's the NL2x I am having doubts about. I like its sonic character better than the NL3 I used to have, but, I am having to adjust to the lack of aftertouch which I've always valued as a means for expression.

I know these synths are very different, have different sonic personalities, etc. But, I am curious what do you think are the strengths and weaknesses of each synth?

Virus kicks the c**p out of the Nord on every possible level except;

-The Nord has a much brighter sound than the Virus, so I don't have to raise the trebel on it all the time like I do with the Virus.

-The Nord's ring and FM algorithms have more bite to them for some reason...not sure what it is but the Nord's ring and FM sounds awesome.

The NL2x sounds rawer and edgier, more cutting than most synth to me. The simplicity is it's strength, including the usage of the 4 slots effectively.
But reading from the original post, all the positive side of the kb makes this instrument a better choice for the needs. Such the asking lead and pads sounds, the Kb engine and fx section is capable of creating a more instantly interesting synth sound. Also the great feeling keys with aftertouch which is a must in this case.
As for me, I prefer the NL2x that sounds great to my ears with the early nord (older VA) character. I like the simple interface, feels of the solid knobs and the big sound of the performance mode. Meanwhile, even I really respect the Virus, which is a great synth..I can still defend my self, not to get infected, yet :wink:
