Cant fight the feeling... (TR909 related)

Post by inVrs » Sun Dec 23, 2007 6:11 pm

So i recently put my hands on a real 909 for the first time.. and holy s**t, i never experienced that much fun with programming beats.
and to my ears.. it sounds very different from all the software/samples thing.
plus, just a little realtime editing of pitch and decay.. and the amazing swing..
can do the trick.

discuss. why shouldnt i get one of these?

A friend of mine used to have a TR-909.

At first I was a bit disappointed because I had expected a lot more, hearing about the amazingness of the 909 kick and all.

But after a bit of usage, holy f**k, that thing sounds great.

Even my roland drum machine, which has 909 samples, from roland, doesnt get anywhere close to the power and feel of the real 909.

If you are itching for one, you will not be disappointed if/when you pick it up.

As for any reasons you shouldn't get it, I'd say if its a money issue, and also, it only does a few things, but it does them very well. Don't expect a very versatile machine, but that should be obvious.
No one cares, no one sympathizes,
so you just stay home and play synthesizers.

If you're looking for the deepest, richest, bread-and-butter box out there-by all means, get one. However, I hesitantly sold mine last year because I became somewhat bored with its static nature resulting from its lack of parameter-lock capabilities. I bought a Jomox 09 and I am quite satisfied now, though I do occasionally have sentimental longings for the build quality, the simplicity and the nostalgiac mystique of the 909.

I think you answered yur own question when you said " holy s**t, i never experienced that much fun with programming beats.

Isn't that what the 909 knobs and your hands are for ?

Well, I like to play everything live, and since I only have 3 hands, I like them to be available for things like molesting my cats, pattern changing and knob twiddling on my other synths whose sounds are more crucial and whose controls are more frequently utilized for on-the-fly tweaking. In other words, I want to set up the drum parameters ahead of time (also allowing a greater degree of percussive breadth and precision), so I'm free to concentrate on other things. Aside from all of that, the LFO capabilities add a whole new dimension to the Jomox units.
