Memo to Tom Oberheim

Post by Leeroy Jenkins » Tue Dec 25, 2007 6:48 am

Hey Tom,

Time to come out of retirement buddy and start designing synths again. Dude, all your friends are making great stuff these days like the Prophet 08 and newly announced LinnDrum II. What have you been doing, eh?

Pullin' it. Tuggin' it. Laying low in California, secretly wishing you actually owned your last name..

Time to get back on the horse my friend. Go to court, get your company back, call up Marcus Ryle and get him to throw in some invesment capital, and start BUILDING FREAKING SYNTHESIZERS!!

I want a modern Oberheim OB-8a or Matrix-24. I want new FVS. I want to hear that awesome, fat sound again, except with full MIDI implemenation and a warranty registration card.

2008 is your year. No more excuses, and no more silly Marion Systems, or whatever hair-brained scheme you are working on these days. Go back to doing what you do best. Make us proud. 2008 calls. It is your density.. er, I mean DESTINY.

i feel an off-topic earthquake coming.

more close to home, i think he is an east bay'r like Buchla, who is also making fantastic- if not astronomically expensive- machines. he definitely needs to design some modern beasts.

I would say the 200e is about as modern as it gets with modulars

I have been w/ Oberheim since I bought and immediately sold my CS80, back in late 70's.

All of my Oberheims are still used, and in mint condition. I do regret selling my OB-8, but it was of a different build style, and no one seemed to be able to fix it after a member of our crew dropped it w/o it's case.

These VSTi's and even that weak OB12 were pathetic. However the Viscount company did T. Oberheim a service by making a controller that is still the best ever made, the MC3000, and MC3000d. They wear the Oberheim name well.

The last Oberheim I even demo'd was at the Gibson booth with the OBM-x. I thought that was the beginning of the end of the age of the " FAT BASTARDS ".

Please come back and punish these weak instruments that we are plagued with.

I do however have some soft synths that can do XPander, Matrix 12, and OBX polyphonic stuff rather nicely, but mono is totally out of the question at this point. But John Bowens soft synths are the only synths that seem to have the capability to emulate FAT BASTARDS w/ polyphony, but sadly, the monophonic isn't there yet, hence the need for me to use the SE-1X , and XPander live to bolster up the bottm and lead licks.

I will buy anything made by Mr. Oberheim.

BTW how can I post some pics of the beasts here?

Merry Christmas.

I know you! Haahaa. Your location gave it away as well as this message. If you still want the mc3000d, feel free to write me. I guess I'll have it on January 10th.

Somehow I don't have the feeling Tom Oberheim is reading this forum, so we'll be arguing to deaf ears no matter what.

He probably hardly knows how to open his email, like my dad.

Fair enough. After seasound went under 6 years ago, I really cant find anything about Tom's doings. Would be nice since all the old school brands seem to be doing alright these days and with all the mixed signal electronics and DSP available for cheap, it would be good for him to come out of hiding and let his creative juices flow

One thing to consider: Tom was born in 1936 which, if my math serves me correctly, puts him at approx 72 years old. How many 72 year-olds do you know that want to go back to work, let alone starting their own company with all the risks associated with it.

Tom, you're a grammpy by now. On second thought, I'd enjoy your retirement...unless of course Dave Smith makes you an offer you cannot refuse.

I guess people aren't clicking this link, each time I post it, when Tom Oberheim is brought up:

OK - so it's not an analog hardware synth, but I don't think he's retired, while working with MuseResearch on the Receptor.

I believe he's referring to the video from which your forum name is (probably?) taken.

Um, no. I have an email from Mr Oberheim after networking my way to him via various contacts. He is more than capable of opening email. The guy designed landmark synthsizers - you really think he can't handle email?
