I have an opportunity to buy a second hand Evolver in a good price
my Question is ....does an older version of the Evolver different from a new version .
of course I'm not talkin about the O,S but maybe in the chips or
internal design and sound quality

Actually, the Version 3 required a chip to be changed out. It is cheap and you can get the reprogrammed part from DSI. This was the upgrade where they allowed parameters to be controlled by CC's as well as sysex (1 and 2 firmware were only sysex) so it is worthwhile for sure.

But you're just replacing one chip with another of exactly the same kind, just with different data on it. You could just flash the same chip if you had the right equipment, but seeing as most people don't DSI do it for you and you just swap them over. I know this cause I did it on mine a few years ago. 
So the chips in the earlier versions are all the same as in v3.0.

My point was that if it is older than SN1858 it will need the PIC updated and wont just take a midi update.
