Compact 'Racky' Desks

Post by crufty » Wed Jan 30, 2008 7:16 pm

Hi folks--does anyone have info regarding compact but 'racky' desks?

A lot of desks I've seen have a lot of depth/width, which is a killer. I don't mind length, but some desks seem to be designed to be in room all their own!

I'm looking for something that can be stuck in a corner and doesn't scream "i'm in the way get rid of me", while at the same time has racks ergonomically located....anyone have any suggestions?

Mackie 1604. Takes up 10 rack units and has a reasonably compact footprint.

There's a company in Australia that makes stuff like this:

Which could be pretty handy. I'm sure there's similar things where you live.

I just have a fairly big desk that my ex's dad's work was throwing away with two 6U racks made from MDF and rack strip on either side. They're a handy spot to put monitors on too, and didn't cost much to make, in fact the most expensive bit of my whole studio furniture was the rack strip, at $30 for two metres. :) I need to get a better chair though...

Take a tape measure to the local cheapo furniture store.

This is my cramped workspace. The desk my parents bought me when I was a kid just happened to have the two shelves on either side about 19" across so it was a no brainer.

i like it. cozy, nice selection, but not cramped.

anyhow, just swing by local thrift stores if you dont mind a project. you never know what you might find if you are feelin a little creative.

it's a very nice music corner with cool selection too.

I also think, that it didn't have to be a specific music/studio furniture for this.
a nice corner computer desk combined with some synth rack should do the trick. Even for some lighter effect, a sturdy glass table may be used for the main Monitor and controller placement. While put the Speaker on the stand and the synth on a dedicated rack.

all good ideas...i was thinking of going down to ikea and seeing if they had any furniture that just happened to be 19" apart, but figured I would ask on teh interwebs first to see if anyone had any ideas.

What I have now is a giant 72" rack (on casters w/locking panels) I picked up from an electronic parts store for $50. my original plan was to wheel it around when in use and slide it back when not, but the thing is so deep its pretty unwieldy.

sounds like overall best bet is to get out the tape measure!

That corner desk looks like a good fit to be honest!

I had one of those monsters, replaced it with these:

much easier to move around and patch. Find them cheap on ebay or behind your latest local dot com co. bust.
