Richard Barbieri Interview

Post by seamonkey » Thu Jan 31, 2008 4:41 pm

This month's(FEB)Keyboard magazine has an interview with Richard Barbieri one of my favorite synth players. He's the keyboard player for Porcupine Tree. His ability to create and play textures which intertwine and layer in PT songs is wonderful.
He speaks of his influences, his lack of technical training, his time with Japan and the equipment he likes to use.
They have a picture of his stage rig which includes a V-synth, VFX, Indigo 2, SH-201, MacBook controlled by a CS-01 and numerous effects boxes.

His ability to create unique textures had Roland asking him to create 40 patches for the new V-synth GT.
If you ever get the chance to view the concert DVD Porcupine Tree "Arriving Somewhere" in support of the Deadwing Tour you can watch him work his magic, truly a gifted artist.

Anyone else a fan of Richard?

BTW I hadn't realized the CS-01 didn't have midi so the line forms to the right to kick me in the "arse".

YES!

His solo album -- Things Buried -- finally released late last year in The States on Snapper Records, is a masterpiece. You can go back to Japan, his side projects, and Porcupine Tree and then, with this album, pick out the frequencies and song structures where he shaped the sound of those bands. His space and style is all his own: a blend of kinetic pads, ghostly, suspended, electric piano lines, and warped synth-mellotron. A real inspiration Richard Barbieri is.

Oh yeah, I'm a great fan of Richard Barbieri and Porcupine Tree. I'll definitely be picking this up. Thanks. :D

Well I assumed he was playing the laptop via the CS-01 by the way the picture shows it stationed below the Mac but it appears he's using the SH-201.My bad since the CS-01 was pre midi. He says he's running Reason instruments on the laptop and using the CS-01 for the lead lines through a distortion modeler, then through an SPX90.

Emusic is now carrying the Porcupine Tree catalog and also Barbieri's "Things Buried" - an excellent album, by the way - so you can easily pick 'em all up now.

Really, really cool synth work - it IS hard to say enough good things about him, without trying to kiss up!

Woof! - Scott

Here's an equipment list from Richard's website. The Roland System 700 is his favorite synth.

I have followed Richards work for near on 30 years as far as I am concerned he is a genius along with most of his old Japan bandmates.

Big fan here too! (And I've stated that several times before on this list.)
If you really are on this list, Richard, I'm the guy in the Copenhagen audience that keeps staring at your work instead of Steven Wilsons. I hope that doesn't bother you too much. But I really appreciate those synth textures.

.

I find it funny that Richard Barbieri still talks down his keyboard technique. His lead synth work on "Bestial Cluster" (indeed, the entire Jansen/Barbieri/Karn project) and his solos with Porcupine Tree on the Warszawa live album are up there with the best. Imagine the sonic, sixteenth-note power of Jordan Rudess squeezed into a dozen, bright, heartfelt half notes blasted by a Line 6 distortion moldeller . . . Now THAT's technique! A consumate lead synth player as well as the aformentioned pad king Richard Barbieri is!

:)

Me, a huge fan too.
I've learned everything from his sounds. And he's the only artist who live-performs sound creation.
