Easiest Access Virus to use?

Post by breitt » Wed Mar 05, 2008 7:05 am

Which of the Viruses are the most user-friendly and intuitive, particularly to a relative newbie? I've always been intrigued by their sound, but put off by the horror stories of their menus and/or interfaces. I also would want one that is fully functional on its own, not requiring any kind of computer/software attachment/integration.

I actually don't do alot of menu diving on my Virus b. Rather I tend to tweak presets. The only "immediate" performance control I can think of that requires more than a twist of a knob is LFO depth, which depends on what destination you want. Some people get confused about the filter pair routings, but you get used to that quickly. My guess is people that are really serious about adding modulation and effects won't mind learning the menus.
Most of the annoyance probably comes from trying to tweak presets and ~remove~ settings, like OSC3, LFO3, and effects routings. In this case, sometimes you can turn a knob and nothing happens. It's better to start from the "init" patch and build up if building is the goal. Menu diving will be a necessity for that, of course, but will at least be more focused.
I am no longer in pursuit of vintage synths. The generally absurd inflation from demand versus practical use and maintenance costs is no longer viable. The internet has suffocated and vanquished yet another wonderful hobby. Too bad.

They all have pretty much the same control interface, except the rack and the new over-priced snow. All I can say is jump in with one of them and see if you like it or not.
