synth punk

Post by Borgol » Thu Mar 27, 2008 9:07 pm

Hallo :)
My preferred musical genre is somewhere between punk rock and slightly strangely-tinged indie. Bands like Brand New, Rancid and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are the most inspiring for me, but a problem arises for me trying to emulate their styles: I can't play guitar. So many punk rock bands use keys solely as embellishments on the melody - background noise like organs or strings. Could anyone recommend any groups or songs that you think would pique my interest - so many other rock bands with synths are geared towards the industrial side of things which also doesn't quite do it for me :(

One trick I've found for just beefing up beeps and blips is using a fuzzbox with my machines - any other tricks out there for making good solid sounds? I'm most skilled with programming my microkorg and anything remotely agressive that comes out of it ends up a half-arsed detuned sawtooth like on any eurotrance song you'd care to name... Other equipment includes an electric organ, various circuit bent gadgets, a Casio CZ1000, kaoss pad and MPC2000.

Cheers!

Some good synth punk off the top of my head, there's: Metal Urbain, a later incarnation of this band is called Metal Boys (both are very good but I think the Metal Boys stuff is a little more interesting that the Metal Urbain), anything by Men's Recovery Project is worth checking out, and of course Suicide are a must if you haven't heard them before.

Borgol: you might like The Appreciation Post. Pop-punk driven by very up-front synth lines. Nice guys, too.

Is the Locust too full on?

There was this great compilation put out by Gomma records a few years ago called Teutonic Disaster, had heaps of early new wave/synthpunk bands on it, check it out.

Crystal Castles. They label their style "trash". It is punk electronica.

Crystal Castles have chosen a very apt descriptor for their music.

+1 Brainiac - amazing band
+1 Six Finger Satellite

Also:
Polysics - Japanese and very hyper
Out Hud - A bit slower, a bit more considered, but good to know about if you're making synth punk

A couple more: K.U.K.L. (featuring pre-Sugarcubes Bjork and Einar, and the only thing that I know of on Crass Records that has synths on it), Tuxedomoon (more toward the artsy end of the punk spectrum, looks like there still around but I can't vouch for their new stuff), Nervous Gender

Those bands you listed have a more of a nasaly 'emo' vibe to some of the singing, here are a few alternatives that keep the angst without the whinging, you've probably heard of these but here goes anyway

Deerhoof

Tokyo Police Club

CSS

Moog LP + Casio SK1 and MT-75 + tube amp = good tone.
