Thanks for the excellent advice guys. I think I'm gonna get hold of Roland TR-505 and see how it goes with that. If no good, I'll be back here!

Completely untrue.

It also has an awesome sequencer function that I've heard is shared by many rolands where you can create sequence loops on the fly.. IE want to loop patterns 4,5,6,7? Hold 4 then press 7 and it will start looping those four. It's a really powerful feature.

yeah, tr-505 is a good bet... great punchy sounds on that.
