Mystery Yamaha Synth Gift!!

Post by mis psiquicios y yo » Sat Apr 12, 2008 3:54 am

My father in law called tonight and told me that he got for free a keyboard for me, (by the way he doesn't know absolutly anything about synths), he thinks i should like it because it has a lot of knobs, he said to me it is a very old Yamaha and that doesn't have speakers, he didn't saw the model so well, tomorrow he will bring it to me.

I'm eating my nails right know, from the description it could be a CS something for free!!! don't know if it functions, but eventhough, for free i can invest to bring it to life if that's the case.

Tomorrow i'll write to tell you what is it, what do you think it could be from that description?

Je, i don't really think it could be a CS80, i think he would said to me it was a very large and heavy keboard, hope it was though :D

A porta synth, hope not, he told me it doesn't have speakers and lots of knobs, so i think, no, it can be that, no . . .

We can probably rule out the CS70M, CS60, CS50, and CS40M. Those are all pretty heavy. SK series not likely either. Maybe a CS5, CS10, CS15, CS30, or CS20M. Can't wait to find out. Keep us posted.

A hoover should help here, the keys are prone to gathering dust.

careful with vacuums.. while that old gear is pretty resilient, vacuums build up and discharge static electricity. Thats why you use compressed air.

Opened it up, i cleaned the key contacts just with a Q tip and cleaned everything more, dusty like if it was on open air for 10 years.

Now, it looks considerably good, has all it's knobs and the pitch slider, everything works, the keys are almost perfect, just three or four have a little delay, you know, you push the key and the sound comes a little bit after.

I had once a SK20 and i once played a almost useless CS30, so i hadn't idea of what yamaha vintage really sound in the flesh, and i have to say i liked it, the square wave is magnific, it is very live, strong but delicate, the saw wave is not so strong, but i palyed "voyage of Penelope" from Air and it sounded very, very good, the lfo is sweet, i think it is fast enough to get into the audio range, it sounds like a distortion combined with ring modulation.

Nice little synth.

Yeah congrats... I've had my CS15 apart to clean key contacts, don't use vacume, use some light sand paper where the Jwires make contact with the strip. I noticed mine had some key issues when I got it, took it apart, and it seemed like they were lightly caroded where they make contact. I actually scraped mine with the edge of a fork instead of sand paper, was enough worked, let it get back to normal. If its worse or something difre then that??? My keys were intermitent, worked better the more I used it, until I scraped those contacts, worked great after. One reason to use your boards periodically, keep those contacts clean. If that helps any, good luck, awesome!

you better be kidding ;)

Too bad I know noone in my family is even remotely interested in muical equipment, so I'd be very suprised (yet happy) if I opened a closet some day to find, say a Minimoog, a space echo or maybe a 303?
