synth sounds like in these recordings

Post by Rasmus Faber » Sun Apr 27, 2008 11:17 pm

I was wondering if someone has any tips on which synths (analogue classics as well as software emulators), that could help me get sounds like these:

Thankful for all help and suggestions!

Grace Jones == Synclavier. Lots of it.

The Ryuichi Sakamoto example sounds very 80's with gated drums and FM-like sounds. There's basically 3 kinds of 80's rigs - early (analogs), mid (Yamaha DX7) and late (D50, sample-based). The movie is from 1987 but the composing process was probably started earlier, so it's FM for you.

Of course, they didn't completely abandon the older machines, so it's a mix of that and sampling.

The most important things to remember:

- copying the gearlist won't help much
- synths do more sounds than just what they're famous for
- it's the cook, not the kitchen.
"Part of an instrument is what it can do, and part of it is what you do to it" - Suzanne Ciani, 197x.

Yeah, the Sakamoto track would probably be DX7, Fairlight CMI, and maybe a bit of Prophet 5. Those were the instruments he was using about then. It was probably recorded at the same time some of the sessions for his album Neo Geo were done, and there's lots of CMI on that album.
