complimenting a 303 and drumstation

trying to compete with a 303... for space in a track is proving to be hard work.

a lot of what i hear is just additions of further percussion to build a track

...i have a jp8000 which i can get some lovely backing arpeggios going, but i find, i have to either, give way to one machine or the other.

is there a machine that you could suggest that compliments a 303...

was thinking of a further cheaper midi bass unit..ie freebass in order to add a extra more controllable dimension...

how does everybody else work in this field

Everybody else knows what those 3 or 4 knobs on a mixer titled "EQ" do.

You want space, cut everything away that you can't hear.

right now i've got my SH101 going along with my FR-777 which is very 303-ish and having some fun results.. weren't the two built at the same time to compliment each other by the way? (101 and 303?)

if you really want to save space i would suggest looking into softsynths if you havent already.. i only have 3 synths on my desk - no drum machine - i do everything else with software..

I usually try sounds that do not compete for the same note range as the patterns i use on my 303 clones. I like pads using both a low pass and a high pass filter. I can remove some low end to not clutter up the sound too much and filter out the harsh high frequencies.

Something along those lines can be heard on my "acid emulations" ep on http://www.quikphix.org

No 303 was used but sounds used are in the same register.

A TB-303 shouldn't compete much with a JP8000. Are you talking an MC-303? I can imagine an MC-303 competing with a JP8000 in a mix. Maybe try a V-Synth to compliment any one or all of them if your looking to stay with the Roland brand. If its a TB-303 your talking about then with the JP8000 and a V-Synth you'd have an Analog, a Digital, and a PCM. If its an MC-303, then I'd say get something Analog, an MC-202 perhaps or an SH-101 maybe if can do it. Maybe just trying another manufacturer of synth with what you've got as well would help your problem.

106 unison bass. Blend it with the 909 kick and the 303 will float nicely in between...
