The Wonderful World of Analog Synths..........&@#@*(*@_#

Post by wiss » Sat Jul 19, 2008 8:30 pm

SO,

I have a wonderful Roland RS 101 in great shape and just a wonderful player. I find this to be a better string synth than RS-505, yeah the 505 and RS-09 have some perks that make them a bit more diserable. Audio IN and control of the Chorus. The strings and brass are much better on the RS 101.

I've had it on ebay, off ebay, and request from 10 watchers to post it back up. Then I decided just to sell locally, I dont like shipping synths. So last night I sampled the holy piss out of it, one more time to make sure I have it caputerd.

Today the person coming to buy it is on there way, I move it down stairs into the garage for showing. I plug it in and what you do you know it's not working. WHAT THE FRICK!!!!!!!!! I had to call him and tell him it's not working now, I dont know what is happening, I am so sorry for wasting your time. He was on the road and was coming from an hour away.

I thought to myself what the h**l, there has to be something to this. I opened it up and I see both fuses have slipped out of place. I pop them back in and POW she is working like champ. I did call him back to let him know that it was the fuses but I all I got was his machine. I did leave a message and played it over the phone.

I guess the RS-101 didnt want to leave me and I am glad it made the choice.

It's funny how things work out like that. Me personally, I believe if I don't manage to get something, it's for the best. Even if you're bidding on ebay and lose at the last second, it's most likely better that way. Who knows, it could have been broken when you got it or something go wrong with it a week later. Maybe even you manage to save money the second time around.
Well fffff.

Ah, fuses.
I don't know HOW many times they have been responsible for me getting great deals!
One of the best things you can hear from someone is "I turned on, but there was nothing... no lights, no sound, nothing." It gets me rubbing my hands together. Of course, it could mean that the power source has failed, but that hasn't been the case yet for me.

My analogs cop attitudes if I don't play them for a while.
The SH-1000 mis-fires for the first hour of playing.
The Mono/Poly needs at least 30-60 minutes to warm up.
The Teisco is just plain batty sometimes...
The System 100 & Poly Ensemble are 100%, prolly cause they see the most use.
Analogs are funny, sometimes not HA HA funny though. :?
I suppose thats what gives them character. :happy3:

such an optimist, you are!

If I miss out on something, I usually tend to believe it's because everything bad always happens to me.

that got me a yamaha cs-20m for $70, but then again replacing the fuses only last for ~5 hours use so I guess that powersupply rebuild is higher on my TODO

not quite as good as the sh-1000 with sustain set to 0 sold as non-working :D.

I had a friend who claimed he bought a so-called non working Micromoog from someone for $30, and it turned out to be filter cutoff and envelope for it were both at zero. It was actually 100% functional, even that damn fussy pitch ribbon.
I am no longer in pursuit of vintage synths. The generally absurd inflation from demand versus practical use and maintenance costs is no longer viable. The internet has suffocated and vanquished yet another wonderful hobby. Too bad.

That's how I got the Technics SY-1010 I had.

Ha ha, the delightful and oft-misunderstood "Initial Gain" knob. : )

Even my brand new Andromeda dos'nt behave itself at times, especially at gigs with tons of stage lighting.
