love affair all over again (MINIMOOG)

Post by shapeling » Wed Aug 27, 2008 4:01 pm

I have been working on a new EP with my band, and we recently lost our bassist. My Minimoog model D stepped up so triumphantly that i have to wonder, who the h**l needs a bassist when you have one of these:)

I've had her for over a decade now, and she sits among a very healthy collection of vintage and cutting edge synthesizers. Everytime I fire her up, I feel exactly how lucky I am to be a Minimoog owner. Thanks Bob. I hope you're building instruments for us on the other side:)

so what you're really saying is that you area a Lucky Man  sorry bad pun, but I know what you mean as I've owned my miniD for nearly 35 years. Bought a Voyager AE tried my best to talk myself into a love affair but alas the V went and the D stayed.

yeah the voyager is a mean synth. but despite having less features and less reliability the model D remains my altime fav mono synth. i am also a big fan of the korg monopoly, sadly mine has gone to synth heaven:(

you caught me. man i'm busted? ummmm. i come on here to talk about gear, because that's what i'm into. i drop links for my projects on every music related forum i visit, intended for the people who might actually be interested in cool new music. funny, there always seems to be one prick who cries spam. if you don't want to check out the links no one is forcing your click finger. i spend a ton of time on my projects. if you spent more time on constructive things you may find yourself with less time to come onto forums just to be a d**k.

rant #1.

anyway, i wanted to talk minimoog. anyone?

i don't own one. but ive spend a 2 hour session with a friend's late moogmusic model d just the other day. again. and again i was painfully aware i really need to get one, even at the cost of lettin go of few lesser pieces.

the fact he the wood, switches and knobs completely restored including new bushings, made it into a helluva experience. as if i was playin a new synth.. nothing was vintage but the sound.. yumm

im always appauled by that filter, the envelopes, and how mini isnt at all limited as its sometimes advertised as. since it has huge sweet spot, i.e. its hard to make a bad sound, it actually has more range than many synths with far greater number of parameters and arhitectural posibitilities, but still sound (comparably) smaller, or just not a s nice.

ive put off getting it for yrs, runnin after polysynths, and then i was scrd off by extreme prices its getting, but now im certain i want one no matter the cost.

JayEm - leave the accusations of spam to the mods, please. Most folk have links to their bands in their signature, and Shapeling didn't actually ask anyone to 'check his music out', just Minimoog talk.

Shapeling - although JayEm's 'welcome' wasn't exactly that, please refrain from calling people names on here. Words like 'prick' tend to bring out the worst in people.

Now, gentlemen, Minimoog talk only please!
I didn't get where I am today by posting on internet forums.

so this summer I was offered a completely refurbished mini, with midi implement, recased, recapped, etc..
it was $3000 Cdn offered to me by a reputable synth tech... not a stunning deal, but current with no ebaying required

I have wanted a mini for forever, had the money, and knew I'd be kicking myself afterward but I still didn't spring for it.. I kind of have my mind set on a voyager next..

but.. since then I got prodigy and it rekindled my mini lust..

and.. that wasn't spamming IMO.. that's normal bboard biz..

I did click it expecting sound samples from the Minimoog though, maybe that's what JayEm was on about.

you are absolutely right. sorry for the names. uncool:) i was just ticked cause i hate when people shout spam. this is a music forum afterall. it's not like this is a place to talk about cars, or football or whatever.

anyway. i got my mini just over a decade ago. and she is immaculate. the wood is near flawless. my only issue is a few of the keys are sticking up higher then the rest. doesn't really effect it's playability, but it looks off. i would like to replace the keyboard outright one of these days, because it's really the only flaw.

and she sounds MEAN.

minimoog trick: hook up a second voltage controlled mono synth (another mini works best) and feed it's audio output into the input of the first. control both from the first mini using cv out, and you have the phattest 6 ocillator mono synth ever. we did this with my friends voyager and i decided right then and there that i need to get a second model D:)
