ARP 2500 examples

Post by Trilex » Fri Oct 03, 2008 2:37 pm

Hi

Does anyone know of any musical examples of ARP 2500?
I collect various synth music , but I don't quite have ARP 2500 covered, in fact I don't have any examples that I know of of this synth. So if someone can think of any kind of musical piece, or song or whatever, where
ARP 2500 can clearly be indentified.

thank you

Someone made an ARP2500 thread a few weeks ago where he posted several audio examples. Look for that.

Two examples I can think of are Roger Powell's Cosmic Furnace, and Jerry Goldsmith's score to Logan's Run. Roger P was nice enough to identify which ARP synth played which parts, so it's pretty easy to suss out the 2500 in the mix.
As far as Logan's Run goes, I'm sure Micke can give us more info on the particulars...

I don't know if they're still there, but CMS's website had some short musical clips done on 2500.

Thanks a lot for the answers, keep them coming

(I've considered Logan's Run soundtrack, but as far as I remember, the Synth is there mostly for musical effects rather than the carrier of melody and harmony)

I'll check out the Cosmic furnace suggestion

As for clips and videos on internet. Well perhaps I should have specified in my first post. What I'm looking for
is high quality recordings available on CD's. That's why I'm asking about music examples.

thanks again, more suggestions would be appreciated

Wanna hear lots of Arp 2500 modular in action?

...then I recommend you to have a listen to the following artists/recordings

Pete Townshend - The Who

Going Mobile - Who's Next (guitar into ARP 2500 envelope follower)
Bargain - Who's Next

1972
Join Together (the 'rhythm synth' is an ARP 2500 or ARP 2600)

1973-1974
Quadrophenia & Tommy movie soundtrack
(the strings on these two productions are combinations of real violin and multi-tracked ARP 2500).

1978
Sister Disco - Who Are You

Roger Powell

There was an ARP 2500 at Vangelis' Nemo studios but it wasn't used on any of the recordings that Raphael Preston did with him (Preston was Vangelis' synth-programmer from 1977 to the early 1980's). Says Preston; "We might have used the 2500 a few times, but not in any "featured " way. It was a great synth though .. I did sometimes use some
elements of it, cross patching other synth into it and out again ... "

Composer/sax-player/keyboardist Klaus Doldinger (of Passport and Das Boot soundtrack fame) recently told me that he too owns an ARP 2500 which was repaired recently. He never used it on any recordings though.

Yet another ARP 2500 owner is Jean Michel Jarre, but he doesn't appear to have recorded much with it either.

cheers,
Micke

Wondering, is the 2500 always the same configuration? Or did people just add the modules they wanted so no 2500 is exactly the same?

Jarre had the 2500 on stage on the latest Oxygene tour, he used it for sequences only. I noticed once before a song started, he went over to the big ARP and pushed a button (start sequence) and this nice step sequence thundered through the speakers.

Not sure, but I think ARP offered the 2500 as a more or less standard configuration, much like Moog with the pre-configured Series I-III c & p models. A customer could obviously custom-build a system (ARP did it with external wing cabinets), but in most 2500 pics I've seen, the module layout looks pretty much the same.

I'd like to now what sequence that was. It more or less plays solo for a short moment on the Oxygene DVD, again a sequence. Btw. Francis RImbert was using this during the tour... did JMJ touch :) it aswell?

Faust have one prominently on display in this performance from 1971.

There are some wonderful synth sounds on the Outside The Dream Syndicate record with Tony Conrad, not sure if it is the 2500 though.

Such a great looking machine, like you imagine a synthesiser should look. Well weapon. ;)

But wasn't the ARP 2500 in Close Encounters just a prop, with the actual sounds done on something else?

The French composer Elaine Radigu does most of her stuff on an ARP 2500.
Keys: Realistic Concertmate 500, Korg K25, Korg Micro X

Guits: '86 Fender Japan '50s Reissue Strat, '80 Aria Pro II TS-300 Thor Sound

The original Close Encounters novelization mentions a Moog synthesizer being used to communicate the five tones. Back in the '70s, however, ARP had a much more aggressive marketing philosophy; they probably just beat Moog to the punch. They even got Phil Dodds, their then-director of engineering, featured in the role of Jean-Claude, the synth technician. The first 5-tone scene was pretty basic; a 2500 would have been more than up to the task. The later scene with the Mothership was pure John Williams--if you listen, the "synth" is now an oboe or English horn, and the ship is a tuba--nice arranging, JW :D
FWIW, I remember a recent Matrixsynth post with a 2500 for sale; the accompanying photo showed Steven Spielberg playing it around the time of Close Encounters.
