Roland JD 990 and XV 5080 what's the biggest difference? Can the JD 990 SRV cards or does it take it's own cards?

JD-990 can only use SR-JV80 expansion boards and JD-800 PCM data cards (forgot what the series number is for those). It is recommended that you get the "Vintage Synth" expansion as it has patches created specifically for the JD-990.

The XV-5080 can accept up to 4 JV80 expansion boards AND 4 SRX expansion boads. You can also add RAM memory (like a computer) and use your own samples. I'm pretty sue there is more on board PCM waves in ROM. The XV-5080 is also 128 voice polyphonic, although most patches use more than one "tone", which will eat up your polyphony faster. It would be more accurate to say it is 128 "tone" polyphonic.

I forget what the JD-990's polyphony is (you can look it up here) since I never use it as a multi-timbral module.

As far as progamibilty and sonic abilities, I do not know their differences. I use my JD-990 as a "second" JD-800 and my XV-5080 as a bread and butter ROMpler.

24 tones, same as the JD-800. A patch can use up to 4 tones.
Switches, knobs, buttons, LEDs, LCD screens, monitors, keys, mice, jacks, sockets. Now two joysticks!
