Talkbox combined with DX-100

Post by midi2 » Tue Feb 24, 2009 6:25 am

I have a DX-100 and I m thinking of getting a talkbox to achieve the famous ZAPP talkbox sound...

I searched and i found these products:

http://www.thomann.de/gr/dunlop_heil_talk_box.htm

http://www.thomann.de/gr/rocktron_banshee_talkbox.htm

has anyone any opinion about these products??will they work for what i want,or should I try to build my own talkbox?? :?

They do work yes. There are even instructions for keyboard use in the Dunlop talkbox.
Btw. Roger Troutman must have used another synth in the earlier days, on the most famous tracks. In a video you can see him use a minimoog, but of course that was just a music video. Well my point was just that people always talk about, how important it is to have the DX100 to get that sound.

I own a Rocktron Banshee and it's definitely a solid talkbox - certainly does everything I ask of it. I have a feeling that the classic Dunlop Heil may be a bit cleaner (and therefore better?) sounding and possibly less noisy, but the Banshee has its own amplifier (so doesn't require an extra amp stage) so is pretty much plug-and-play. Also it seems to be generally a good bit cheaper second-hand.

You might get away with driving the Heil using your synth's line level output, or possibly headphone output, but since it's generally a guitar processor it'll be expecting a speaker output from an amp. The benefit of this is that you can then connect the Heil to a speaker cab and it'll allow you to bypass the effect completely via the stomp button - great for the gigging musician.

Having said this the Banshee also offers an external speaker output as well, and even goes as far to provide a "to amp" output that can be used to pass the signal to a combo amp or amp head - basically it's more flexible overall at the expensive of having to use its own less-than-stellar amp when talkboxin'.

I believe the dude from Chromeo uses a Banshee and has a DX100 with the sysex data from Roger Troutman's DX100, so check out the Chromeo stuff to hear what can be done with the combo.
