Classic Roland TR-808 beats on Youtube

Post by Harlem Nights » Tue Apr 21, 2009 8:58 pm

Back again after the LinnDrum beats topic :D ... Now two films about the TR-808's early days:

Think of Yazoo, Marvin Gaye, SOS Band, Shannon...

This was a nice exercise again, this time more in classic synthesis and layering sounds than in sampling. I like the Korg Electribe SX even better than the small ES1 that I used for the Linndrum films - it has many great options to mangle samples beyond recognition. For example, I'm sure that Vince Clarke did not use the 808 for the droplet effects in Yazoo / Situation (plz correct me if I'm wrong), but on the ESX you can get close to this sound by tweaking an 808 kick

I replaced the ESX tubes by JJ ECC803S, for better sound, much fuller / rounder than the original

Hope you enjoy!

Great programming, but there's still something missing from the samples that only a real 808 has.

Keep 'em coming!

Great work, funny as the Linndrum and 808 are my two only drum machines and I never thought in replicating those patterns, it was fun to see.

I agree with Z that the 808 has an extra something that's unique to it, but the Linndrum patterns were pretty authentic

keep up the good work!

what's next DMX? CR-78? 707? Drumulator?

Nice work for sure. Love my ESX, although it's currently in the shop with output problems. Waiting to hear back what the diagnosis is. When it's working though, it's certainly one of the best samplers in the price range and very different from an MPC.

I've been wanting to replace the tubes when I get it back. What's the spec on tubes for the ESX. Is there a certain type you have to get(i'm sure there is)? Never was a guitar player so things like that elude me. I don't have the manual with me or i'd look there. I wanted to get the best tubes I could as long as they are reasonably priced. Can you recommend better ones or are these the "Piece de' resistance?"

I especially liked hearing "Dirty talk" and "Let the music play". Reminds me how much I still want to eventually get an 808. :(

That was ace! The Linndrum replicas were nice, so are these. The additional synthplaying gave a nice impression. This one really made me want to go through my elektro collection :)

I followed some advise on the Dutch synthforum and some other sites about it. These tubes are cheap ($ 10-15 each) and easy to replace, and indeed make a large difference in output headroom and fullness, without the coloration and distortion that the original tubes have. No use getting top end tubes as the circuit in the Electribe does not feed them such a high voltage like in a guitar amp (so I've read), but these are a worthy improvement I think

hah, i thought the gimmick was that tubes were in there to add coloration and distortion in the first place!

awesome videos - makes me realize i need to spend more time with my esx.

Funny - one of the audio tracks for these videos will be used by a New York fashion designer for a show video, very curious how that will combine

BTW working on the Oberheim DMX right now, found quite some tracks already.. Again requests welcome!

The beat starting around the 0:55 mark...
