Depeche drum machines

Post by nathanscribe » Fri May 01, 2009 4:59 pm

I've just been watching the DVD that came with Sounds Of The Universe, and there's some nice but fleeting gear-p**n. More on that shortly. First though, I wonder if anybody can identify this, which appears around 6 mins in, when Martin Gore is talking about his drum machines. The photo is not clear, as I just snapped the shot from my TV, but the word "CASIO" is clearly identifiable when watching. I can't make out the model though. It looks similar in style to the RZ-1 and SZ-1, but is neither.

A virtual beer for the first to correctly name it.

Anyway, a brief unordered list of things to be seen in the footage of them recording:

Oberheim Matrix 12
Roland System 100 (101 keys & 102 expander)
EMS VCS3
OB Xpander (I think)
Roland SH09
Korg MS-20
Korg SQ-10
Doepfer or similar Euro-rack 6U at least
Modcan B
ARP 2600
Yamaha CS30
Steiner Parker Synthacon
Roland Juno 6

The drum machines:

EMU Drumulator
OB DX
Rhythm Ace FR-2
Roland Rhythm 330
EHX DRM-16
Roland TR-66
Roland CR-78
Korg KR-55B
MFB 502
Boss Dr-55
Roland TR-606
SCI Drumtraks
...and that weird Casio thing.

Lots of outboard, like Space Echos and API lunchboxes, an EHX Bi-filter, Metasonix, Vermona... I couldn't recognise all of it. There's a huge rack visible that was just too unclear for me to identify. Kind of resembled two 2600s stacked ontop of each other in one box, but wasn't that.

Casio DZ-1 "MIDI Drum Translator"
not necessarily a drum machine (it doesn't generate audio), you can google for a better description.

No one cares, no one sympathizes,
so you just stay home and play synthesizers.

I know Depeche has my old minimoog. It's the very first sound you hear on the album.

I picked up the box set for the album. If you're looking for gear p**n, look no further. Besides the three CDs and DVD, it also comes with a bound hardback with loads of studio shots. Piles of synthies and drummies everywhere. There's also a paperback booklet that has more shots.

The one thing that struck me as kind of neat about this album versus some of their older material is that I actually have some of the gear they use on this record. In the past (especially the distant past), there was NO WAY I would have had access to the kind of toys they had (Emulators when they were new, etc…). That kind of tells you what has happened to synth gear (and maybe even the music industry) over time. They still do have a budget that I can't ever touch and some pretty rare gear that would be hard for me to get, but lots of it was pretty routine stuff: Juno 2, Poly800, etc… It's a good time to be a synth enthusiast.

In one of the hardback books there's a picture of a a load of synths standing on end including a Pro1.

I was the second highest bidder on that JP-6 on eBay. Seems like Gore had more cash that I. Life is not fair. Bu SOTU is nice, so I'm fine :D
