Korg R3 Vocoder advice please!

Post by BigSynthLittleSynth » Wed May 06, 2009 4:05 pm

Hey, I'm a bit of a synth noob. I recently got a Korg R3, it seems cool. I play in a rock band and we want to cover "Harder Better Faster Stronger" by Daft Punk for a laugh. I've skimmed the manual a bit but I think I'd get a good answer from some experienced synthers in this forum.

So, what should I do to get that really clear vocoder sound in that song?

Try that.

Nah Harder Better Faster Stronger is a vocoder, Around the World is a talkbox though. That video only sounds good because it's layered with the actual track.

I'd recommend using a mic other than the one supplied with the R3 (if you listen to the input signal alone you can tell it's not the greatest) - an SM57 or 58 is always a solid choice for that - and ideally you'll want to put a compressor between the mic and the synth, or at least enable one in the synth's effects. Also you can definitely make a patch that's a lot more clear than the factory ones, the key is simply using saw waves, maybe an octave apart, then playing around with the amp env times so it sounds good. Keep the filter wide open.

I'm not sure how long the formant motion recorder is offhand, but since the song is (with a couple of exceptions) a loop of "Work it harder do it faster make it better makes us stronger more than ever hour after our work is never over" that they seemingly chop up by only playing at certain times, you could try recording that into formant motion and then messing around with it.

Thanks! I have a good Sennheiser microphone which should do the trick.
