Cost and simplicity perhaps?Dogboy73 wrote: But I wonder why Tom didn't do something similar? The patch panel version with basic MIDI>CV built in would have been awesome.

Re: The New Tom Oberheim SEM Thread
That's very true, and putting in the patch points yourself would be much easier than building your own midi/CV convertor. Only problem is where to put them all?Dogboy73 wrote:The patch panel on the SEM is totally passive. There is no circuitry in there. So I'm guessing that adding patch points to the MIDI>CV version would not be the hardest mod in the World to do.

didn't the original have them at the top edge?Stab Frenzy wrote:That's very true, and putting in the patch points yourself would be much easier than building your own midi/CV convertor. But I guess you could make your own cabinet with MID>CV part on the left & a nice custom build patch panel on the right
Re: The New Tom Oberheim SEM Thread
I've heard from Tom that the MIDI>CV SEM's should be shipping by the end of this month
......... although he did say that last month as well!

Now this is really cool!jcn7 wrote:Yes I can use my Kenton CV/midi converter and use velocity on the filter...could also route this into a multiple to control filter, envelope, etc all at once...I've also used my Yamaha bc-1 breath controller on the filter which is also very cool! Jaime
Did you notice any "stepping" on the filter when you used the breathcontroller?

Re: The New Tom Oberheim SEM Thread
I'll have to try using my bc-1 again to double check if there was any stepping, but it seems like it was quite smooth. I've also tried this on my MS-20 which was way cool...it was really sounding like a didgeridoo. I have found that the Kenton converter is overall my favorite due to it's smoothness. The only thing I'm not as wild about is the portamento. It's ok, but not as good as true analog portamento. Jaime
Re: The New Tom Oberheim SEM Thread
I spent a very brief amount of time playing Z's Tom Oberheim SEM. Here are some edits from that short session:
I had no time to mess with the patch panel, so it's just straight up bass and leads with no modulation.

I am no longer in pursuit of vintage synths. The generally absurd inflation from demand versus practical use and maintenance costs is no longer viable. The internet has suffocated and vanquished yet another wonderful hobby. Too bad.

Finally, an audio clip!! Thanks a lot Solderman.
From the speakers I have I can hear it has a cool vintage sound. Not THAT different from the others ..but still very good.

Ah man. I didn't want to listen to any SEM demos because I knew I would get GAS for one, and I'm living off of dry dog food and water as it is.
Thanks for the demo Solderman. I know they're basic patches but they sound gooood.

I've been living off bread & water, since telling the misses I've ordered an SEM, as a demonstration of my determination & will to get one of these things. It's getting a bit boring now but it's worth itPrimal Drive wrote:Ah man. Re: The New Tom Oberheim SEM Thread
sounds awesome. i might have to move the SEM up to the top of my wish list. as much as i love my FR Revo's for acid lines, they sound downright mushy and thin compared to the SEM.Solderman wrote:I spent a very brief amount of time playing Z's Tom Oberheim SEM. That clip sounds great. Is this the new SEM? Sounds very alive.

Re: The New Tom Oberheim SEM Thread
By Tom Oberheim SEM, yes I mean the newer one. I'd be more interested in getting one myself, but I think I'd long to have more than just one voice!

that sounds absolutely fantastic!!!!Solderman wrote:I spent a very brief amount of time playing Z's Tom Oberheim SEM. Here are some edits from that short session:

i'm not into cv stuff so i have only one question: those sounds you just played, are they possible with "just" the midi version or did you use some patchpanel reconfigs to get certain sounds?
they are a bit expensive in the EU, but i might just NEEEED this one whatever the cost....
