Actually, chrisrnps is quoting Green Xenon's OP from another thread. He/she apparently considers that post as one of the dumbest things anyone has said about a synth.

Crystal Method and a variety of other electronic dance, techno, trance, ebm, house, et cetera, use SO MANY techniques, tones, rhythms, and flare that was developed in the disco era that at times they are interchangeable.

Sometimes I wonder what a lot of artists out there are actually thinking when they come up with their beats and melodies.

I was just making the point that many people (include my buddy, whose musical taste peaked with Poison and Damned Yankees, view anything electronic with occasional repetitive beats as "disco".

And most of the chord progressions date back to at least Blues, and the arpeggio sequences date back to middle ages minstrel type playing... next point?

I agree. All genres of music borrow and steal from each other and find their origins in earlier forms of music. There is nothing new under the sun as a wise man once said.

My dad collects clocks (he has about 15 now...)

I believe the correct answer is "Only if I make them sound the same intentionally".

This one goes back to unfamiliarity again, but on showing photos of my rack synths to some people, I get questions like "What is that, some kind of equalizer?". The confused look I get from them is always worth it too when I point to the one item in the rack and say "That's a chorus." The response is usually "So what is that?" or "like people singing?".

Well if they don't know about music production saying "chorus" to people would be rather confusing. I don't think thats so much stupid as just not knowing about something. My father can explain car things to me that I would never grasp if he wasn't explaining them. Does that make me ignorant or just unskilled in a field.

I agree with Heath. You can't accuse someone of saying something stupid when questioning why you need another synth if they're not familiar with them. That may be ignorance on their part, but how can it be stupidity?

Just to clarify, I did say I was talking about unfamiliarity. No back edits, I swear!

Perhaps he meant "keyboard" in the sense of having 61 keys with an approximate ratio of 5 black ones to every 7 white ones?

I'm not sure about the dumbest thing I've heard, but I did watch my mother try to play chordy church music on my Minimoog. I redirected her to my Akai and she seemed better off.
