OK, after running the internal sequencer for 45 minutes the kick drum settled down, however when i tried the Groove Electronics midi retro fit im finding the kick drum jumps around in volume from +7db to -4db

Your 808 is of no use to you, give it to me instead. The kick drum changing on every beat is normal, this is the beauty of an analogue drum machine.

Then why the big changes in volume in midi mode compared to internal sequencer?

Nope - I don't agree - yes some minor shift in volume and sound but this sounds like something more dramatic is going on. I agree it's a little odd the effect is only going on when you are using your midi interface. Is this the case when the kicks are played at a very slow tempo and the velocity is at a fixed level via midi?

hi, yes ive tried fast and slow bpm and have set veloctity at max for all kick drum hits and yet some hits are very quiet. and this is only in midi mode, when triggered by the internal sequencer they at a more equal volume, i have made recordings of the two modes in sound forge and the difference is visible.

If you are using Trig mode instead of clock mode, won't the varying levels of Midi velocity cause different levels of volume? Here's The Manual.
I am no longer in pursuit of vintage synths. The generally absurd inflation from demand versus practical use and maintenance costs is no longer viable. The internet has suffocated and vanquished yet another wonderful hobby. Too bad.

Is the problem just on the kick or any other sound?

just the kick drum, i wonder if it is possible that the retrokit is taking away voltage from the drum channel?
