That's definitely a sampled synth hit, pretty much that whole 2 unlimited type rave genre was built around samplers with the melodies from single pitch samples played across a keyboard (super basic sampling, no nice sounding multisamples or anything like that). The sound quality is pretty telling, but even moreso is how the release/decay speeds up as the pitch raises. Your best bet is to track down an old sampler and go to town, no multisampling or anything is necessary - the original synth that was sampled was probably an Alpha Juno or something like that though.

I can tell myself that its sampled, what im really looking for is how you would go about making that sound on a synth, for example what wave form etc, i actually have an alpha juno but i am yet to hear any sounds on it that resemble the one im looking for (with exception to the hoover sound which is a defining sound in old skool rave)

reminds me of my old MC-808 patches, 100% agreeing with it being sampled and played back, a virus A will suffice all your rave lead needs :D

The sound is all over Pictureplane's tracks too. Can anyone guide me towards more of this excellent early-90's rave music?

These're sampled chords - not a single sound. I can make similar sound on every synth that has bulit in chord mode.

Rave on!!!

Yeah, additionally, it sounds to me like it might be multiple synths sampled together, like for the second track maybe the root is a mellow bass sound (maybe even solidbass or latelybass) and the fifth is something more hoover-y, or for the first maybe something like a hoover-y root and a SH-101 acid-y minor 3rd

Sampled. The sound can be found on http://www.synthmania.com/sr-jv80-11.htm - "Igor Circus".

This is a sample from an old Todd Terry record i believe. It later came to be known as Todd's Keys. BTW, that version of This Is Acid is so far from the original that's it's terrible.

Most of all those old Rave stabs sounds are nothing more than Orchestra hit samples. That's all they are.

The Quasimidi Quasar is loaded with techno rave sounds.

But as far as the stab sound, you can find that in Korg's newer boards like the MicroX and M3 I know from experience. Old Roland JV board with the techno card, as pointed out, has those sounds also.

I think various other romplers probably have these stab sound scattered over the presets somewhere.

Besides synths that contain preset stabs, these stab sounds can be made by using anything with a fast attack and decay, typically orchestra sounds, but any harmonically rich sound would do. Basically, as pointed out, I think only triads are used (root, 3rd, and 5th).

Keep posting more Rave songs! 8-) I liked LA Style's one and only album, but I never was able to get a collection of Rave music/albums together.
