Electribe Tubes

Post by polyklinik » Mon Dec 21, 2009 7:53 pm

Hi!

I saw a comment about changing tubes on the new electribes. Somebody recommend the Groove tubes 12AX7.
What are the experiences? Is it make any technical fault? :ugeek:

Groove Tubes kind of suck, in my opinion. As far as cheaper stuff goes, I prefer EHX or Tung Sol.

Truthfully, very little. I swapped in some supposedly quieter Mullards, then Tung Sol - nada. I suppose if you keep your tube gain cranked you might here some harmonic detail, but I use all 4 outs, so I tend to keep the tube gain down so as to avoid sonic discrepancies. I just put the EHXs back in so I could use the nicer tubes somewhere worth a damn.

I guess what I am saying is don't rush out and drop a lot of cash on a couple matched tubes (least of all vintage ones) in an attempt to make "warmth" or whatever. If you have some 12AX7s laying about, by all means, go nuts, but otherwise it's just snake oil (my opinion, of course, your mileage may vary).

the tubes that come with the esx/emx are EHX, and they've got nasty (useless) distortion starting at relatively low gain. If you want to use tubes for better gain so you can reduce your over all noise floor while also getting some decent tube warmth/shaping, the JJ's are the best option IMO. Get 3 or 4 of em in a pack deal off ebay for cheap (i got 4 for 25-30$'s) just so you can have different pairings to try till you get a good match. replacing them is cake.

I use the JJ's. Seemed to take a bit of the nastiness and tinnyness out of the distortion- I found the original effect absolutely useless as previously mentioned. Could just be my perception though. I got mine from Eurotubes.com which has very good service. I agree with tallowwaters- I wouldn't go broke on tubes for the electribes, but I like what I have much better than what it came with. I can actually use the distortion now instead of keeping the gain all the way down to avoid the crappiness of the tubes.

I know that. I was simply saying that EHX would still be better than Groove Tubes trash. Regardless the tube path on the tribes is pretty much a gimmick.

You guys know Sovtek, EHX, Svetlana, Tung-Sol and a whole lot of other brands are all made in the same factory on the same production line, they just test them when they're made and brand them according to how good they sound? With those ones you get exactly what you pay for.

Yeah, but why does that matter? I was simply saying a cheap a*s Russian tube (EHX) sounds better than a cheap a*s Chinese tube (Groove Tubes).
