FS1R question...

Post by Joethelion » Sat Dec 26, 2009 5:45 pm

Hello everybody and happy holidays to everyone, here's Marco from Italy!

I just bought an FS1R, amazing machine!!, in these few weeks I've just scratched only the surface, but I have one doubt and I'm not able to find the answer in the (cryptic) user's manual :( ...

I'd like to play individual voices, and I've understood that when I'm in Play-Performance mode I have to press the Part button in order to play single voices and/or surf through the various Voice banks with the Cursor/Value buttons (and please correct me if I'm doing something wrong)...well, my "problem" is, it seems to my hear that every individual voice I play is "affected" by the dsp effects of the original Performance I started from, I mean I'm in the A006 Hollywood Performance and whatever individual voice I play it has the same effects of the Hollywood Performance...maybe I'm wrong, but I've noticed that while playing the Voices that are from the original DX7 library, I'm a DX7 owner and there's something "strange" in these sounds...I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong or if there is a way to hear the "dry", or with his own effects, Voice...

Sorry for my bad english, hope its clear what I'm meaning...

Ciao!!

Marco

If you want to play isolated voice, just initialize a performance and load in it a single voice. It will sound as it is, without filtering or effects.

Not much to add to the comprehensive replies above, (though the effects menu is one of the easier things to access from the front panel and you should be able to switch off the added effect here). I use a korg wavestation as a controller and remarkably the vector controller interfaces with the fs1r! You can get some awesome realtime control with this! :D The wavestation also has a nice empty flat surface to place your rack on. :D :D

Thank you!

I had already downloaded the editor, but did not enough time to use it yet, thank you for the link anyway...

Ok, I've understood the "logic", even though IMHO it's not as "intuitive" as it should be, maybe because I've been always using synths in which the two "sections", individual voices/programs and performances/combinations (or whatever they called them) are clearly "separated", mmmmhhhh I'm thinking at Korg T3 where there is the programs banks and the combinations banks and they are two completely different "sections" of the machine, in the FS1R it seems that the things are a bit more mixed together ;) ...

Ciao!!

i rearranged your response to explain your problem. the FS1R begs to be used with a software editor. with the editor you'll be able to wrap your mind around what's under the hood much more easily. i would never use the user interface to edit, it must be an exercise in frustration & inefficiency.

great synth, though! it's one of a couple synthesizers i own that i can comfortably say i will never exhaust its sonic possibilities.

Get rid of it and buy FM8. Problem solved.

Does the FS1r respond to polyphonic aftertouch?

I love my FS1r. The computer editor is a must-have. I sat down and programmed 20 patches with the editor during the first few days of owning the FS1r. It really lends itself to experimenting and assigning real-time controllers. The onboard effects are remarkably good, too. It's one of the few digital synths that don't require bypassing the effects, in most instances.

Why not add a new UI to your FS1R?

I just got this template: http://mapage.noos.fr/michael.rosner/C4DESIGN/FS1R.html

For this:

...Not the cheapest solution but it's like adding a new knobby front panel to the FS1R.

Not nearly the same knobbage, but a much cheaper solution to FS1r knobbage is the DX200, also a nice little FM beastie unto itself.

DX200 is nice, though it's only 6 Op FM and no formants. It's actually a DX7 in a somewhat knobby groovebox. It literally has one of these plug-in boards inside: http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/Con ... TID=206800

The Mackie C4 Pro only set me back $365. new, BTW.
