Midibox MB-808 Last Orders?

Post by 7Hz » Thu Jan 28, 2010 11:03 pm

Hope this is ok with the mods on this forum...

The Midibox MB-808 is almost about to go into board production, and it look like it could be the last batch ever, so if you fancy one, go to http://eight-oh-eight.org/phpbb2/viewforum.php?f=1 and get your order in - $100 deposit plus less than $100 wnen the boards are ready for the main board plus hard to find bits.

Looks like it is going to be a most excellent 808 reproduction, together with a mind blowing midi-box sequencer specially designed for it.

I am not affiliated with this project apart from I have my deposit down on one!

That forum is a bit disorganized. What all is in the kit? Just PCB's and rare parts, or is there a complete kit option too (I'd definitely be interested if there is)?

PCB and rare parts. Cases due later this year. The rest is self-sourced.

I've been rubbing my hands in anticipation for about a year on this one...

Hmm, have to think about whether I should go for one of these, or finally get around to modding my DR-110.

Parts-sourcing/enclosure-making is the main thing that turns DIY from fun project into tedious chore for me.

It comes with the 'difficult' parts.

One or two orders for the rest and you'll be rocking, parts list will be available of course.

Case is planned for later this year.

While I agree on the "enclosure-making" part, honestly self-sourcing is pretty simple. I did it using someone's BOM for the x0xb0x and it was relatively painless. You might waste $10 buying the wrong thing and needing a re-order, but you learn a lot in the process.

I have painful memories of trying to get the parts for my JH Triple Chorus. Someone had made a Mouser cart for it, but a good chunk of the parts were obsoleted already. After about three hours of trying to find the current equivalents, I gave up (still need to go back and take another crack at it).

I did picking/shipping at a bio-tech company for four years, so I think I'm just burnt out on poring over long lists of quasi-standardized, letter-number combination codes. ;)

I know the feeling. Midibox tends to use standard new parts, and there's good documentation and forum support. Sourcing the old operational transconductance amplifiers and whatever stuff used in Electronotes inspired modules can be a total pain. My SID went together in a night; it was like a cookbook. TK's an awesome programmer.

Hmmm sometimes I think the 808 and 909 are done past the point of cliche but this looks tempting...

Bet it feels good to be a proud parent of an MB-808. Congrats!

I know that feeling!! I waited for some parts on backorder for my x0xb0x build for a month. I had another issue and talked with a digikey rep and they said "hey.. We have that part in stock with a better tolerance so I'll ship you it" and it was a facepalm moment..
