Linndrum hitting 808 prices...??????

Post by kuroichi » Tue Mar 09, 2010 4:47 pm

At what point did the Linndrum start commanding £1000 price tags?

It's as though eBay has become its own entity, void of the outside world....

Sez the man who wants a Linndrum!

If anything, the price inflation for vintage gear has slowed since the economic bummer began a few years ago. Generally, unless its in absolute c**p condition, 'vintage' musical gear of any advancing age is increasing in price to a ridiculous degree. Have you ever checked prices on 1970's guitar pedals lately, even ones like the Mosrite Fuzz which were considered so unusably trashy in their day they were essentially laughed out of the marketplace? What about crappy late 1970's Fender guitars or their early 80's amps? Now they're considered 'lost classics' rather than barely operational detritus ruined by cost-cutting. The price inflation trend hits EVERYTHING collectable in any way. It's already happened with 70's synths, 80's gear is obviously next. Anything with any level of name recognition is ultimately going to be priced far higher than its value, and Linndrums have nothing if not name recognition.

My wife wonders why I hold on to my unused 'vintage' stuff rather than going ahead and dumping it like anything new that I reject. Because, ultimately, someone WILL pay me $1000 for my DMX, or $2000 for my P600.
Gear List: A bunch that go 'WHHONNGG!', several that go 'tweedle tweedle' and 'thumpity', and a few that don't make any noise at all but have lots of delightful little lights on them.

Start stocking up on early 90's ROMplers - they're next! (Yeah, right!)

I look forward to the day my pentium 90 running rebirth is considered a classic, what with it's warm tone due to wobbling DAC frequencies.

I didn't bother waiting. I sold my vintage synths recently. Seller and buyer are very happy! :)

Only if it's got the FDIV bug - those are the only ones suitable for pure analog simulated drift.

It wouldn't sound the same without the SB32.

I had one.

That won't happen.

And I'll learn trombone if the roland XP or the Yamaha W5/7 series gain some reputation on a few years.....

Its amazing how back int eh 80's the 808's were so unpopular and cheap ;)
And those Linndrums had a nice 5k price tag. Now if only the 808's went down in price on ebay listings >.>

If you want to see something totally absurd... look @ the prices Frostwave's fx boxes are getting listed for. There's a sonic alienator on ebay right now for 750$'s. That's more than 3x it's actual MSRP and it's not even 3 years old.

The Linndrum prices don't make any sense either. There are thousands of Linndrums out there and they're not very resuable in my opinion.. so limited in sound and value. You can get some of the emu mod chips for them, but what experience are you paying for on a Linndrum? It's not like its a enticing live performance bit of gear or that the hardware holds some seriously special sound/approach over just having samples from it..
