The video has a Jupiter 8 in it. The sound itself is just two oscillators an octave apart, each doing pulsewidth modulation. Being a JP8 owner, I can tell you that the PWM is something special. :)
I am no longer in pursuit of vintage synths. The generally absurd inflation from demand versus practical use and maintenance costs is no longer viable. The internet has suffocated and vanquished yet another wonderful hobby. Too bad.

It was recorded with a Prophet 5 and they used the Prophet 5 live. Check out 2:53 specifically

The top synth is definately a P5, but underneath that looks like a Jupe 8 which is what he is playing the ostinato part and power chords with. He only plays the P5 a couple of times in the video (that we can see).
I've recreated the ostinato/power chord sound on my JP-8 using 2 slightly detuned saw waves, filter nearly all the way open with a touch of resonance.

Off Topic: I'm taking a Final Cut Pro class at the local JC and one of our upcoming assignments is to recreate (edit) the original video by using new footage shot and starring students from previous or other class. Here's one that has already been completed:

c**p. you're right. I didn't pay that close attention to the video and saw him play a synth and later saw the back shot. I didn't realize there was a synth on TOP of the one he was playing in the beginning of the video. I stand corrected. He clearly isn't using the Prophet for much of that song.

Nice catch.

p.s. thanks for the video link. pretty cool.

I met Jonathan Caine in summer 2006 (OK, shameless name dropping) and asked him if he still had his Jupiter 8; in a blase way he said yes but that he had all the sounds he used sampled. He really sounded as if he could have cared less about the JP-8. :o

Very cool video Z! :D
