Re: Who knows what synths used Giorgio Moroder in Scarface O
Here's what I know about this...
Apart from Giorgio Moroder himself there were four music arrangers/synthesists involved in the making of the Scarface OST; Arthur Barrow, Sylvester Levay, Kristian Schultze and another guy whose name escapes me for the moment.
Let's start with Levay and Schultze; they arranged and performed the instrumental underscore as used in the film. Schultze did the album version of "Tony's Theme" as well as most film versions of that theme, whereas Levay performed the rest of the instrumental underscore (except the cue that accompanies the "Cubans(?) arriving in the boat" scene, which I'm told was done by Barrow). Barrow additionally arranged and played synths and bass guitar on all of the songs. I'm not sure about the other instrumental cue featured on the album, "Gina's and Elvira's theme", but I do know that neither Schultze, Levay nor Barrow performed this particular version (that's what they told me anyway). I'm guessing therefore it was done by the fourth guy and/or by Moroder himself.
About the gear....
Arthur Barrow used a Roland Jupiter-8 and Serge modular synthesizer.
Kristian Schultze used a Yamaha CS-80 (which provided the huge pads on Tony's Theme), Minimoog (the bassline is a combination of a Fairlight sample and Minimoog, thunder effects etc.) and Fairlight CMI II ('voicy' sounds, percussion etc.).
Schultze: "it was my Fairlight ser II at that time, the 8bit-machine that I transported to Georgio..s place from Munich, together with my custom library on those big disks!!!!"
A linndrum was used in combination with cmi-percussionsounds.
Not sure about Levay because he simply didn't remember what he used on this score when I asked him about it. I can tell you though that most of his "Airwolf" score (which was recorded around the same time as Scarface) was done on an Oberheim OB-8 and DSX so it's not unlikely that he used the same setup on Scarface. Furthernore, Moroder had a Minimoog, Jup-8, Synclavier II, Prophet 5 and possibly a DX-7 at the time so some of that stuff probably made it onto the score as well.
The music was recorded on 48 tracks (2 studers synchronized)-
Hope this helps
