Any Colour You Like Patch

Post by monolith » Wed Jun 02, 2010 9:55 am

Was it a minimoog used on the lead sound on this track?
How would I go about making this sound? I got pretty close around a year ago using my Mono/Poly, but cant remember how and haven't been able to do it again.
It's a simple sound, but I can't get it 'right'.
Thanks for any help!

Afaik, the lead instrument is a Synthi AKS (or VCS3) with a very long tape echo.

ANY COLOUR YOU LIKE
(David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Richard Wright)

David Gilmour : Fender Stratocaster Guitar (dub tracked) through a
Leslie Cabinet, Vocal Scat, EMS Synthi-A Hi-Fi Guitar.

Nick Mason : Premier Drum Kit

Richard Wright : EMS VCS3 Synthi-AKS (solo & bass drones) with long
echo delay, Hammond RT-3 Organ through a Leslie 122
Speaker.

Roger Waters : Fender Precision Bass Guitar through Hi-Watt Amplifier.

Track sheet: Bass, drums, Uni-Vibe guitar rhythm, organ, scat guitar, VCS3 lead, VCS3 repeat, VCS3.

The above info comes from two different sources, none of which mentions the Minimoog.

If you watch the director cut of live at pompeii, there are clips of them in the studio working on DSOTM and the only synth around is the VCS3.

According to Alan Parson (the producer) they used both the Synthi AKS and VCS3 on DSOTM, the former
being used for the famous On The Run sequence. Rick Wright definitely used a Minimoog on the DSOTM tour though but I'm not 100% sure whether it made it onto the album.

Remember you're probably not just hearing the straight output of a synth on ANY record. There's likely some EQ shaping this relatively simple sound. Plus, in the case of this track, it's going through a pretty fancy signal chain.

Lol, when my sh-201 was the only keyboard I had I tried for hours to recreate that patch with very little success.

It just sounds like two rectangle waves an octave apart, closely tuned with no filtering. The delay does the rest.
I am no longer in pursuit of vintage synths. The generally absurd inflation from demand versus practical use and maintenance costs is no longer viable. The internet has suffocated and vanquished yet another wonderful hobby. Too bad.
